carmichael and mcmichael

Hi
First, Lesley, thanks for putting that link in.........I think I did something wrong in uploading it!
Catriona and Jim, thanks for the suggestions. McIninsh..........certainly different, I had never heard that before. Another question though, do you think it looks enough like the mothers name on Davies cert? We're certainly dealing with the same sort of time frame and area.
I think it looks v likely, but thought also there was a slight difference in the name, but maybe the registrar wasnt that sure of it either?!

Is it just a coincidence that one of Samuel's witnesses is an Alex Carmichael?

If Alex Carmichael is the name of one of the witnesses, I would immediately be looking for his relationship to Samuel. I've had some great finds thanks to researching witnesses.

Best wishes

Lainey, I think it is McIninch- There are only 3 in Griffiths Valuation of Ireland. (there are a few more McAninch). All Ulster except for 3 Dublin McAninch.

BUT - there is an Archibald McIninch in Co Antrim, Parish of Billy, Townland of Lisnagunogue Lower who has a neighbour a few entries away called Margaret McMichael.

The date these entries went to print was Oct 1861. (Hugh was dec. at the wedding in 1864, so Margaret McMichael could have been head of household at that time.) It's possible that Archibald was either Margaret McMichaels (nee McIninch) father or brother etc.

There is another Mcininch/McMicheal Parish match only in Londonderry, but I would think the townland match of Archibald McIninch and Margaret McMichael might just be worth further investigation.

Got to say I felt a bit silly even mentioning it. Really didn't think I could have been the only one to notice it.

Me too :D Discovered I'd been searching censuses for entirely the wrong place. Used the bride's witness name and her name in separate searches and got both in the same parish. After that finding out her siblings names was easy.

Hi all,
I have no doubt that Samuel and Alexander were brothers.
Once again, too coincidental that Alex, was a witness at Samuel's wedding.
I quite like the McInish suggestion, for their Mother.
Alexander McMichael was in Muiravonside on the 1851 census aged 18.
And on all other census returns up to 1901.
It had been a while since I looked at any McMichael records, but the family originally came from Antrim.
Since Lainey posted re McMichael, I have had a look at what i have.
Quite a lot, though I had never paid too much attention to any other family members, other than Alexander and Elizabeth Muir.
Elizabeth's mothers maiden name, on various returns has been, Warlen, Harlen and Stirling.
More to follow on this

I would go with McIninch too, that was the way I first read it when looking at the image.

Done a wee bit of digging and am now convinced it is McMichael. I will definately get a start on looking at the witnesses tomorrow. As I now feel quite confident about the name, I may not end up with so many dead ends. I think I may have had a wee bit further luck today, as I found a Margaret McMichael married to an Alexander Baird's grave stone, so I may have the 3 comparisons........well fingers crossed. Thank you all for your help and suggestions, and I will let you all know what transpires
