Gibbons.....

Post by Steve » Tue Apr 19, 2005 6:00 am

Hello folks,
Whilst I am making great inroads on my Sweeney research I can,t seem to move with Gibbons.

What I have is Catherine Sweeney Married James Gibbons 1883-1947 in July 1905 at Hutchestown Glasgow.

James parents were John and Annie (Bradley)

I have searched the following
Census 1901 for John and Annie also John Annie and James ( trying to get the names with the same reference ) I can't see a match

I tried cross referencing districts for deaths for John and Annie after 1905 as they were not marked as deceased on James marriage cert.
1883 births for James 2 births wrong parents

census 1891 for James around 9yrs one James wrong parents
Can someone please give me some more ideas

Thanks
Steve
Sorry about the long winded post

Hello Steve,

no need to apologise: it was not long-winded. Try Gibbins and you will be successful for an 1883 birth. In general, it is best to use a wildcard search such as Gibb?n* to cater for "i" or "o" and the possibility or not of a trailing "s".

Regards,

John

Steve,

the name Gibbon also seems popular in Scotland i.e Lewis Grassic Gibbon. Gibbons is very common here in the West of Ireland while Gibbon is not.

Don't know if that helps.

Hi Steve,

There is an 1881 census entry as follows:-
9 Commercial Street, Govan
John Gibbins, Commercial Traveller 29 born Glasgow
Ann Gibbins 28 born Ireland
Thomas Gibbins son , scholar , 8 born Glasgow
John Gibbins son 3 born Glasgow
Mary Bradley widow mother in law 57 born Ireland

Possibly your family?

Isobel (Edinburgh)
