Hi Campbell,
Are you sure that John GRANT was always known by the last name GRANT.
One line of my family are in all censuses as CUNNINGHAMS, which was my GGgrandfathers stepfathers name. All births, deaths and marriages in my direct line are registered in either McGIBBON or McCUBBIN,(bar one) . I have gggrandfather in the 1851 census under his "real" name of McGIBBON, then his mother marries a man by the name of CUNNINGHAM c1856, and from the 1861 census on the family shows as CUNNINGHAM on censuses, which continues down to my Grandfathers generation in 1901.
If anyone tried to find the births of any of my GGgrandfathers or Ggrandfathers children going by the info on the censuses, they would never find them. Hope you can follow what I am trying to say here.
Maybe you could try looking for the marriage (if they actually did marry) just using the wifes full name (with all its variations) to a John with no last name?
Karen
Why Can't I find these BIRTH Entries at Scotlands People?

Hi Campbell
) ? With no kids yet? What are their given ages and occupations?
Have you located deaths for either of them?
Sorry to keep asking questions and offer no answers!
I've been looking, but nothing obvious has turned up yet, so I'm just trying to gain a fuller picture.
Best wishes
Lesley
So, John & Catherine are married by that stage (or living as husband and wife1871 census states that they are in Maryhill R.D., St. Rollox Burgh of Glasgow.

Is it possible that the children were registered elsewhere - despite Glasgow being listed on the census. I know my grandmother returned to her parents home for the birth of all her children & that is where the births were registered.
Was Catherine's family around when she was having her children. I see she was born in Argyll - were the family still there?
