Hi all,
Hope someone can help me here!! to all the people who don't download the tiff files to paper or pc.....why!! I really don't understand your thinking here. If you download them to paper and put them in a folder in year order i.e all your births, then all your deaths then marriages etc it makes it miles easier when searching for people or for seeing gaps when you think children should be born etc, also you've paid for it... If for some terrible reason you pop it in your sleep tonight would it not be nice for your rellies to carry on your work, cos they don't know your username and password to carry on and get them from SP. My aunts and uncles also like looking through my folder at the certificates not just a big map on the wall with dates etc
Thrall, good to see the printer spewing smoke, it will save you grief later my friend, as for USB sticks....they are good if you don't use them every day but they are not very "bounce" friendly. I use them every day at work but only for transferring data from one site to another not as a storage device. They are good though for home use and are quite cheap for the good ones.
Cheers
Stuart
Talking of backups....the reason for this thread is because "something" has happened to SP and we/you have lost images...does this not make you want a copy of your files. I can then prove to SP I have a copy of the cert and get credits to get them again...can you??

Hi Stuart
I've recently had to start replacing the original ring binders with lever-arch folders.... and I have an "in tray" of documents waiting to be filed! I get through a heck of a lot of plastic pockets but this is not a big problem as a "job-lot" of these was bought on e-bay which should keep me going for a few years!!
I find just browsing through these folders sometimes can turn up bits of information I may have overlooked or not quite realised the significance of at the time.
When I "pop my clogs" my offspring will need a small lorry just for the family history stuff!! I did consider that perhaps I should put some sort of clause in my will which mentions that:

I would agree this is useful - infact, necessary, I'd say. I often have to go and check on some detail on an entry and with the huge number of pages of records I seem to have mounted up on SP it can take me ages to find any particular event again even using the sort facility. I store the printouts in separate ring binder folders for births, deaths, marriages & census with sub dividers for 41/51/61 etc. There are 2 sets of folders - one for one Goalens and related families & one for McNicols and related families. Due to an overflow problem and the rings in the folders cracking up under the strainIf you download them to paper and put them in a folder in year order i.e all your births, then all your deaths then marriages etc it makes it miles easier when searching for people

- a. the stuff exists - brief summary of contents
b. where it is all stored
c. that a copy of all the family information (or indeed the originals if nobody wants to keep the stuff!) should go somewhere like the SGS and all the books and other materials I have accumulated which would maybe help others with their research should perhaps be distributed to appropriate libraries.

Hi Lesley, to contribute to general thread drift, a quick question for you: I have William David Bathgate, Medical Practitioner, Captain N.Z.M.C., 34 marrying Helena Mary Scott Duncan, 31 (my grandmother´s youngest sister) in Edinburgh 1918; he worked all his life in hospitals in Palestine and Syria, brought up in Outram, New Zealand on a sheep farm. Any connection?.
BTW, the youngest witness I have found so far is on the MC; my aunt Doris, also later a doctor in the Near East, aged 10. Do they get much younger?
Good hunting,
Thrall

Hi Thrall
Sorry, don't think there is any conection with your Bathgates.
I have what would appear to be a 9 year old as a witness to her uncle's marriage in 1879. I've often wondered about it - but I'm pretty sure it is her. It does seem strange though...
best wishes

Hi Lesley, worth a try though - never made a connection, but one of these days perhaps.........LesleyB wrote:Hi Thrall

You´d wonder whether no one else was present at a marriage with 9 and 10 year olds used as witnesses; of course it was cheaper to take a minor along and get a "half" on the bus!.......
Good hunting,

Probably overkill on my part, but every SP image I have ever looked at was downloaded right away.
To be truthful, it was mainly because I find trying to read them on screen really difficult and, anyway, hard copy, especially where there seems no immediate connection, can be notated and filed for later scrutiny. As a result I have never really checked if all my viewed images are still there.
When I have more time I will have to check - well I am a well trained Scot. If I bought it - S'mine!!!

I posted this yesterday on the SP part of the forum:
I've got several pages of viewed images at SP. The last couple of pages though, seem to have eliminated the contents of the "description" column, making it very difficult to know exactly what person the image refered to.
Anyone know why this is happening?
After reading this thread I realize that I have taken for granted that the images will always be there on SP.
guess I shall have to buy lots of paper and printer ink ....

I have had images that I have looked at come up as never viewed ie they want me to pay another 5 credits to view.
At first I thought must have viewed that when I was at NRH but after I found one that I had actually printed a copy of realised it wasn't me having a "mature moment"
It seems to happen when I have viewed from a different computer(I am not the least techno-minded so presume this is coincidence!).I use my FHC one & both my sisters & my brother's.
Now I don't always save as the type of imaging I use causes all sort of havoc for printing & it is difficult to download/print on the same format -lost you but I know what I mean!!
If I use Direct Download find it impossible to print-out(previously worked ok)So I use either Applet or Java which for some reason will not let me download or it comes out in word not graphic form!
Now I am confused.I just cannae work computers ok

As I have now mentioned is the SP part, I started printing off the first page of the SP lists of Viewed Images, Searches so that if one changes status , disappears or whatever their re-indexing does to our stuff, at least I also have proof of what was there.
