COMPLETED Am I missing something?

Post by scotmum » Mon Nov 05, 2007 12:15 pm

Hello folks, hope someone can help.

Having searched for the following chap and his family on SP over the years, using as many wildcard variations as I could think of, the years 1851 and 1861 have eluded me (daughter married a day or two after 1861 census hence I strongly believed was in area at/before census) I finally seem to have found him/them using a 3 day free Ancestry trial, albeit only a transcription as they do not have images for Scottish census returns. The 1851 seems spot on, albeit 1861 is a bit off with ages and wife's name, yet children's names all as expected.

On Ancestry they appear as Owen Flin and family in Dundee, Angus, born Ireland. From later Census and Deaths, they seem to have actually been Flinn (with 2 n's) and sometimes, Flynn. Although the 1861 return has a different wife shown, it does, as expected, have a daughter Ann shown, and their address is noted as Scouring Burn ( Ann's marriage stated she lived at Scouringburn).

Have re-visited my SP searches and tried some more, but still can't seem to find them.

For 1851, Ancestry gives Reg Dist 282, ED 36, Household Schedule Number 201, Line 9, Roll CSSCT1851_61

For 1861, Ancestry gives Reg Dist 282/2, ED 38, Household Schedule Number 83, Line 4, Roll CSSCT1861_41A

Anyone any ideas on how I can find them on SP?

Hi there

It seems you didn't try enough wildcards....the fact that his age stayed constant probably didn't help either....

1851 FELIN OWEN M 50 DUNDEE DUNDEE CITY/ANGUS 282/00 036/00 047

1861 FLIN OWEN M 50 DUNDEE SECOND DISTRICT DUNDEE CITY/ANGUS 282/02 039/02 017

Best wishes
Jean

Jean, that's great, thanks. Was going around in circles on this one. Just shows what a fresh eye (and different wildcard) can do - how I missed the second one especially I don't know. :D

Forgot to say, I don't think this chap ever liked his age, it differs on later Census and death as well.

Yes I have ones who are twenty years younger on a later Census & that's a bloke- he's Irish too. That's my biggest discrepancy although it could be the enumerator to blame. I was beginning to think it was his son(same name) but he was living elsewhere.

Perseverance & sometimes looking at the oddest things-something to be said for the old films where you can browse through a whole Parish & pick up strays.

I remember looking at a Fiche which had the Census 1841-1871 for the same area on it.Fantastic I could see my GGGreat-Grandfather as the eldest son with lots of younger siblings & his widowed Mother. Then you could see the boys marrying(well appearing two or three houses up with wives & then children)My GGG was still there with his Mother until 1891.He does marry(not my GGGranny) & dies at the same address.
Still can't replicate it on-line & my notes have disappeared. So it's only what's in my head.
