Why Can't I find these BIRTH Entries at Scotlands People?
Just wondering if someone can please tell me if he/she has had a problem finding BIRTH entries for Lanarkshire?
The 1881, 1891 & 1901 censuses has supplied me with the following information on my GRANT ancestors.
Parents names are JOHN GRANT & CATHERINE MCKECHNIE/MCEACHERN
1. MARGARET GRANT born 1876-1877 Glasgow
2. JOHN GRANT born 1879 Glasgow
3. CATHERINE GRANT born 1881 Glasgow
4. DON* or DAN* GRANT born 1884-1885 Glasgow
5. MARY GRANT born 1886-1887 Glasgow
6. ANN GRANT born 1888-1889 Glasgow
7. WILLIAM GRANT born 1891 Glasgow
BUT, why can't I find their birth records in Lanarkshire?
Thank you, Campbell.

Campbell,
I don't know the particulars on how SP works, but I did a search for:
John Grant
male
1878-1880
All districts
and got 120 results over 5 pages. I looked at the first page and there are John Grants from Tradeston,Dennistoun, two from St. Rollox and one from Kelvin. These are their districts. The City County comes up as Glasgow City/Lanark for each of these and all are supposed to have images available.
Hope this helps!

Hi Campbell:
Welcome to TalkingScot
I've had a look for all of the children you've listed. If you enter Lanark in the District box, no records are found. If you leave the District box empty and only enter Lanark or Glasgow in the box labelled County/City/Minor Records there are records for all the names including Dan* , but not Don*
When you choose to view the names in a list, you will be given the location codes, which can be cross-referenced in the List of Parishes and Registration Districts

Hope this helps,
Frances

Why Can't I find these BIRTH Entries at Scotlands People?
Thank you very much for replying to my question. And also thank you for your search suggestions but I did do just what you suggested.
Problem is I PAID to view EACH RECORD. For instance, William Grant born 1891 I paid to view every William Grant born in Glasgow in 1891 and none of them are my relatives.
Back in 2005 I paid to view these GRANT ancestors on the 1871 census but the census record didn't match the index.
Now I'm wondering if my GRANTs' records from Glasgow just weren't put online.
Have you ever heard of that happening?
Thanks,
Campbell in British Columbia, Canada

Why Can't I find these BIRTH Entries at Scotlands People?
Carol, thank you very much for your help.
I actually paid to view every JOHN GRANT born in Lanarkshire bet. 1878-79 and didn't find my relative.
This is the problem that I have had with all his siblings, therefore I'm wondering if the records just aren't online?
Have you ever heard of a complete family's birth records missing from Scotlands People web site?
Can't find the parents marriage record either.
It certainly is mysterious to me.

Hi Campbell
..and welcome to Talking Scot
In order for us to help you, can you tell us a little more about where you found the information you already have? e.g. I'm guessing you have maybe seen a census return and have estimated the births of the children and found their birthplace there? Or maybe you have found this information elsewhere? Do you have deaths for any of this family? Did they remain in Scotland? If not, when did they leave, to the best of your knowledge?
I'm not aware that there have ever been cases of whole families missing (but there is always a first!) - usually it is found that they are either hiding behind some mistranscription or that they were not born or married where it was thought!
If you can fill us in a little on the background e.g. what was John Grant's occupation? then this may help us to help you in your search.
Best wishes
Lelsey

Just in the off chance have you tried McKechnie as the surname or are you sure John and Catherine were married?CAMPBELL wrote:Carol, thank you very much for your help.

I found a *atherine McKechnie in 1881, a Donald McKechnie in 1884 (there is another one in 1883 at St Rollox where I would have expected your family to be registered) and a few John's within the years you are looking for.
Maybe total coincidence but worth a try?
Good luck,
Annette

Hello! Thank you for your suggestion.
I did try searching for John GRANT & Catherine MCKECHNIE's children under MCKECHNIE using soundex without any results.
Therefore, I can safely say they would be GRANT births.
I contacted Scotlands People and they said if the GRANT births aren't online then that means the parents didn't register the births.
I find that hard to believe that the parents would neglect to register all seven of their childrens' births.
Like I said, I can't find the parents' marriage registration either.
There was a problem in the past with the 1871 census for my GRANTS in Maryhill, Glasgow as well.
The GRO had to put the 1871 census in the mail to me, as it was indexed but not online.
Thanks for your suggestion,

Hi Campbell
I've looked at the 1881 entry for what appears to be this family, which you will already be familiar with, from the LDS census disks :
Best wishes

Leslie, that is an excellent question regarding boundaries. I have considered that after reading that some parishes can be in two different counties or something to that affect.
1871 census states that they are in Maryhill R.D., St. Rollox Burgh of Glasgow.
As you can see 1881 they are in the parish of Barony; Lanark County.
1891 census states that they are in Civil Parish of Barony; Parliamentary Div. St. Rollox; Quoad Sacra Parish of Maryhill; Burgh of Glasgow.
1901 census they are in Partick, Lanarkshire; burgh of Glasgow; Quoad Sacra Parish of Possilpark.
All the censuses gives the childrens' birthplaces as Glasgow.
Appreciate your help.
Thank you,
