Help deciphering please
Hi all
Please could I have some help with parts of the death cert of Peter Gray, just uploaded to the gallery.
I read it as:
Peter Gray, Pensioner and Weaver. Then ????, Widower of Isabella ?.
(His son's death cert has Isabella's surname as Hepburn - but this does not look like that at all, and as the informant is a son, this is more likely to be correct than that given by the neighbour who was the informant on the son's cert).
Also have a problem with Peter's mother's maiden name ?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Andrew, will do.
In the meantime, I think I've got Isabella's maiden name - Kinnis. I've found Peter in 1861 with his sister in law Jane Kinnis.
Cheers

I saw his wife's name as Kinnis and there is such a marriage exactly where it should be.
PETER GRAY Pedigree
Male Family
Marriages:
Spouse: ISABEL KINNIS Family
Marriage: 10 JUN 1817 Collace, Perth, Scotland
Andrew's right though and hopefully a better copy from SP will make it all clearer. His mother's name is very hard to make out.
As for what's written after his occupation I'm intrigued looks latin to me.
Regards,
Annette

First, have you found Isabella's death certificate?
I only ask because I'm wondering if that latin-like wording might have something to do with her having been declared dead "in absentia" after being missing for the required period of time. (7 years if memory serves me.)
Then again, maybe I've just been drinking too much coffee

Help with deciphering certificate
Hi Ellen,
The word immediately after Pensioner & Weaver could be Peninsular followed by Quatra Bras and (Military ?). The Battle of Quatro Bras which took place on 16 Jun 1815 between Wellington's Anglo-Dutch army and the left wing of the Armee du Nord under Marshal Michel Ney. Given Peter's age, he may have served with the army and been aged 31 had he been at the battle. On the other hand I found a Quatra Bras street or road in Hexham mentioned in a Test Centre Route.

Got to say I'm quite relieved my idea was way out.

Thanks so much everyone.
I've been rooting around while you have been beavering away for me, and agree with all of the above thanks.
Emanday - unfortunately Isabella died somewhere between 1832 (birth of last child) and 1841 census.
Re the military bit, have found Peter now on the 1851 at Collace. He is "Chelsea Pensioner 42 R Grnt" according to Ancestry. So must now go see if the 42nd were possibly at Quarto Bras.
Nelmit - yes am fairly sure that Jane Soutar is Peter's mother. There are 3 children showing to Andrew Gray and Jane Soutar. No Peter unfortunately, but there are gaps, and they're in the right place, so looks promising.
Thanks everyone.
Ellen
