Query regarding birth certs etc.....

Post by Margaret » Wed Aug 03, 2005 4:46 am

Hello All
I am realatively new to researching on the net, and I am at present setting up an account so that I can pay for certificates ect. My question is do I get them from Talking Scot, or do I go to Scotlands People. Also do I need to know dates ect or is ok to just have a general time slot for a person. Can I get a copy of the certificates download so that I can then copy it to my family tree prog..Hope this isnt a silly question, but living over here in Australia sure seems a long long way from Scotland when I want to find things out.
:?
Cheers

You need to go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. TalkingScot is purely a Discussion Group.
Also do I need to know dates ect or is ok to just have a general time slot for a person.
That all depends :- Finding Ebenezer McGILLICUDY will be easy without too accurate info on dates, but for John SMITH you need as accurate info as possible. As a general rule the more accurate info you have to start with the more quickly you will find the records of interest.
But watch out for traps such as relying on a year of birth calculated from the age shown on a census, or marriage record, or death record ............

When you pay to view a register entry ("certificate") at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk you can also download that copy.

Enjoy

Hullo Margaret

I find it useful to do some initial research using
www.familysearch.org
on the International Geneological Index for events before 1875. The site is free and it can help to narrow things down, before looking for certificates on Scotland's People.

All the best with your research.

certs queries

Post by Margaret » Thu Aug 04, 2005 12:40 am

Hello Davie and Catriona
many thanks for your help, and yes Catriona I did have a look at IGI for my Grannie but she was not to be found. After your letter I went back and put it in again, this time only looking at 1 year at a time and all countries and guess what, I have found her so now can go looking on SP for the certificate. Once again many thanks :D
Cheers
