Milne 1871 Census found in Ancestry but Can't find in SP

Post by rjpaton » Wed Mar 17, 2010 12:00 am

I also am having the problem where I can find a record in Ancestry but not, try as I might, in SP. It is for my GGG grandfather James Milne a blacksmith who lived in Cailwood or Callwood cottage near Dull Perthshire from about 1861 to 1891 as I have the images for all but 1871. I have tried a lot of wildcard combinations like m*l*n* or m*n* or *l*n* etc. and I even tried going through the alphabet ai*, bi*, ...( with the age 41 from the Ancestry record) but to no avail. I submitted a question to SP but they declined as they are "not permitted to help with any searches". However my point was that I think they might have a missing record. They suggested "If you think a record has been missed out however then please contact GROS as we cannot check that as we do not hold those original records". I am not clear why it would be GROS's problem if Ancestry has it OK & it comes from the same source as SP's. I noted elsewahere the suggestion to look at neighbours. However, this Ancestry record does not appear to have any link to neighbours as I guess Callwood cottage is way out in the country. Anyway, any suggestions would be greatly apreciated.

Folks I had a better look at what I could do with neighbours in Ancestry & found by searching for specific registration district of "Dull" & registration number of 346, and ED of 1 and setting the household schedule number to one different to the Milnes I was able to find the neighbours on either side (16 was the Menzies - 17 was the Milnes and 18 was the Robertsons). It cost me an extra 5 credits though as I chose the Robertsons first and it was on the previous page :?

Anyway, there is a problem with the image though. The camera must have been off centre as the photo is cut off just after James Milne (the rest of the family is not visible). I will take it up with SP!

Regards
Robert

PS: I note Callwood cottage is available as a tourist cottage nowadays. It was rebuilt inside the structure of what was the Blacksmiths smithy - there are several tourist sites on the web with pictures & rates, etc. I may have to stay there one day when I get around to visiting Scotland :) (at least I think this is the same place - near Dull)

Hi Robert,
Nice detective work tracking down that image! Did you ever find out how the Milne family are indexed on SP? If it is way off you may be able to get your extra 5 credits back (as well as the complete image of the correct one).

All the best,
Sarah

Wow! And even with wifi so you can visit Talking Scot while you are staying in the cottage  Go for it! (Maybe in the off-season, however... gets a bit pricey in the summer.)

I once found that the house where my great grandfather was born had become a B&B and booked it when I was on a genealogy trip in that area. Very cool and the owners gave me a free night because of the connection! His great grandfather bought the place when my great great grandfather died and I was finally able to show that the two were actually second cousins and presumably knew it at the time, unlike their descendants several generations down the road

Cheers,
Sarah

Thanks Sarah & Tracy

I got back to SP straight away explaining about the half image and also that it appears you can't search successfully for that Milne family and SP gave "many apologies" and said they will ask the reprographics department to re-scan this page and will send me a copy of the image via e-mail as soon as it is available. Also they will also ask the department in charge of the indexes to see if they can find what James Milne may have been indexed under in the 1871 census. And they refunded my 6 credits, so alls well that ends well.
