Decree of Divorce

Post by David Caisley » Wed May 23, 2012 8:16 pm

I have a 5th June 1885 marriage between George Snailum and Isabella Maxwell (statutory marriages 685/03 0126) Canongate Edinburgh. There is a note of a Register of Corrected Entries for the divorce of the marriage dated 20th July 1899 Could any one tell me how or where I can obtain details of said divorce, I have looked on ScotlandsPeople but cannot find any reference to Divorces.

Sorry if this is long winded but I am new to this site and this is my 1st post.

kindest regards DC

Hi David

And welcome to Talking Scot. :D
You can usually find divorces by vising the National Archives of Scotland (In the same building as the Scotlands People Centre, Edinburgh) If you look up the NAS online catalogue:
http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/
you can find a reference for the divorce which would give you the ref you need to order up the document(s) for a visit:
CS46/1899/11/4 Interim decree of divorce, George Snailum v Mrs Isabella Mitchell Maxwell or Snailum, and another Nov 1899
CS46/1899/12/5 Decree for payment of expenses in action of divorce, George Snailum v Mrs Isabella Mitchell Maxwell or Snailum, and another Dec 1899

Best wishes
Lesley

The divorce proceedings were reported in the Scotsman. Hopefully I've uploaded the file in case you don't have access with your library card.

It's the last story in the column.

For anyone like me who has little knowledge of Scottish legal terms (or as my husband tells me medieval latin)

avizandum (pronounced av-viz-zan-dum) Avizandum is the legal term for a judge's or court's private consideration of a case before giving judgment. A judge or court makes avizandum when time is needed to consider an argument or submission.
