Hi,
I'm new to the Scotlands People site, and for that matter this site as well. I think the Scotsland People site is great, and I was impressed to get a couple of marriage certificates and a census record easily and relatively inexpensively even when converted into Aussie dollars. What does concern me though is I couldn't find a way to enter the parents names in the statuatory registers for births to limit the records found. I notice for the old parish records there was advice on how to do this. I don't know the locations involved, so I couldn't use this to limit the results. I really want to be able to put the parents (or at least mother) otherwise this is going to be extremely costly, ie 5 credits just to see if I have touched on the right person with the right parents.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks
Mandy

This facility is not in the index on SP for births because the information on the parents is unfortunately not included in the index, at least those which are on-line. It wasn't until the late 1920s that the mother's maiden name starts to appear in the index.
As earlier records are checked and revised, the info on the mother's maiden name is being included in the index, but there is not yet a field for this info on the search or results screen on SP, and unlikely to be for some time, I'd imagine, as there would be so few results where that field would have an entry.
In New Register House in Edinburgh, the separate search engine does show this information, but it's only real use is from the late 1920s onwards.
All is not lost, however, as when LDS indexed the birth records from 1855 up to 1875, plus 1881 and 1891, they also indexed the names of both parents, so that a parents search on IGI at www.familysearch.org will produce the names of all children to named parents, but only for those years.

More enlightened but still wish it were not so
Thanks David,
Unfortunately at this stage I am caught in the net of years which is not picked up by the LDS, alas I think the best way for me to narrow my searching is to start with the parish noted on the marriage certifcate and hope that the family have not moved about too much.
Again thank you for taking the time to answer.

Two tips.
Firstly, look for the family in the various censuses.
If that doesn't work concentrate first on given names matching those of the grandparents and parents, and keep an eye open for middle names that match those of the mother, grandmothers, even ggrandmothers.

Viewing the Cenus records sounds like a good plan
Thanks David
That does sound like a definite plan of action. I noticed that viewing the census records is less credits than the birth records, so this is a great suggestion.
Thanks again.
Kind regards

PS I hope the computer god smiles on your laptop again soon.
