1861 census problems on SP

Post by tishgibbons » Sat Oct 29, 2005 6:45 pm

Help!!

I've locked the doors and banned all visitors this weekend so I could revel in the 1861 census on SP. Great success at first found my G.g.g.g. auntie Mary Mitchell in Crathie whom I wasn't sure existed. But today, when I search for Mitchells in Strathdon I get a list of 8 of them but when I try to view I get Thomsons, Reids and others in whom I haven't the slightest interest! It's gone and gobbled up all my credits. :x I've sent a contact form (two actually, sent the second one when I realised it had gobbled up my credits!) but I suppose the weekend will have passed before I get a response! I'm not just mad, I think the word is apoplectic!

Oh Trish you must be biling!!! Isnt it wonderful though to get what you have.?
Sometimes you strike lucky & they will refund your credits as well as rectify the mistake. I think they have hoisted by their own pertard-too much plublicity & now the site cant cope with the traffic so lots of mistakes & breakdowns so lots of complaints & so less time to deal....vicious circle I think it is called. There is nothing more Vicious than a thrawted Family Historian...Ive opened the window & had a good scream for you.

Hello Tish,

Have you checked the GROS page number from your search against the number you view?

This happened to me with 1871 - let's say my record was on page 17 but the one I viewed was page 19 but indexed as 17.
I eventually used the next page function to see what I wanted therefore paid for pages which were no use to me. I did get refunded after many confusing but polite contact forms.

I hope this makes sense.

Regards,
Annette M

Thanks folks!

Thanks for that tip Annette, but Mastercard has decided to take a dim view of my plans for the weekend anyway, so Joette, you just keep on screamin!

Hi Tish
I had a little blip during the week with the 1861. List of possible persons page came up, clicked on the one I wanted to view and the link displayed a different name. e.g I'd clicked on Christian Dick but the link to download said Fred Bloggs (well, it didn't but you get my drift...)

However, the page was the correct page. Both Christian Dick and Fred Bloggs were on the page.

Contact form sent. (you gotta get that in before anyone asks!!! )
Best wishes
Lesley

Re: downloads

Hello everyone,

I encountered the same phenomenon as Lesley during testing, i.e. a download would have a differnet name to that requested but would be the correct page. There is a further twist in that if you search on just a surname, the family member with the earliest forename alphabetically will be the one appearing on the download file name.

This was reported to SP during testing as being potentially confusing, and something on which people might not want to risk money. I urge people to send in contact forms.

John

Hi,

it turns out I had the same problem as both of you, John and Lesley. SP then replied and explained the same thing and in fairness gave me back 10 credits although I suppose I didn't really 'lose' any credits. All's well that ends well - just means I have to wait until next weeked to do any more searching. Work gets in the way of family research!
