Hello everyone,

I have been searching SP for some time for the birth of my 3 x great grandmother Margaret Knox she was born in Lesmahagow around 1800. I have found her marriage to Thomas McGowan in the OPR on 16.2.1821 but can find no trace of her birth, any ideas about where to try next I am stuck.

Hi Audrey,

Do you have her parents' names? (hopefully on her death certificate if she lived until at least 1855, assuming she died in Scotland). If so, you could do a parent search on the online IGI. That could produce some siblings of hers (and a bonus of she is listed too - possibly with a strange mis-spelling that has kept her your searches to date).

Do you know for sure that she was born in Lesmahagow? If siblings were found, they could also give you clues as to where she may have been born. That would give you an option of searching through the OPRs for that/those parish(es) to see if she is there, but escaped being indexed. The "where" question may also be answered if you have found her in the censuses.

Do you know where she is buried? Is there a headstone? If so, who are all named on the headstone?

Hi Andrew,

Sadly the only thing I have been able to find is that her husband Thomas was a widower at the time of the 1851 Lesmahagow Census. Her parents are not named on her marriage on the OPR. I have not been able to find a grave in Lesmahagow, in either the Churchyard of the church they belonged to or in the main churchyard. I did find the grave of Thomas's brother.

Thank you for that, the May mentioned is my cousin and neither of us have got any further with finding a birth or death for Margaret Knox. My great great grandfather and her great great grandmother were brother and sister. Small world.
