HELP SAVING IMAGE!

Could someone please tell me what you're supposed to do to view an image after you've saved it from SP to your computer? I've saved several images by clicking the little button above the image (File name says c:\sample.tif), I click OK but when I go into my C drive and click on one of these saved images I just get jibberish or the message saying file can't be found or can't be opened I've looked on SP for an answer but can't find anything that helps (of course, since I'm not that computer literate, it might be staring me in the face and I just don't see it I could print the image then scan it and save it in my photo software but that seems a long way around.

Anyway, can anyone help?

Hi Ann

When i do it i dont save it there. That is the first "save" option that comes up but i have a "browse " button beside that so i click that and chose Documents and Settings - then chose the file from the drop down menu then file that all my family stuff is in and save it there and re name it.
Do a "search" on the file name c:\sample.tif and you should find it (she says !)

Just as a matter ot interest, what happens if you launch your photo or image software first (what are you using? Photoshop? PaintShop Pro?) then try to open the files into the program?

Tracey beat me to the reply by a long shot
But I will add that after I have saved it to My Documents I then open it using Windows Picture and Fax and then re-save it as a tiff document, this prevents me having to continually answer the question of what programme do you want to use to open it. I then plonk it in my relevant family folder for easy future viewing.

But as Tracey said, it is essential to open the browse button to select where you want to save it, and to rename it, otherwise it just overrides any other file with that name.

Many thanks for pointing that out. I won’t tell you how long it took me to find where I had actually saved the images when I used the first “save” option. Now I’ll use the “browse” option and save with my other ancestry files.

It didn’t seem to make any difference if I had the image software opened first or not but thanks for asking which software I used. I think when I was getting the “gibberish” I actually went into my computer from my Word programme…obviously, that isn’t going to work (what do I know!). I also tried to open the images in Kodak then MGI, which was my first software programme that I was comfortable with, but it didn’t work. When you mentioned PaintShop Pro (I have PaintShop Pro Studio/Photo software) I realized I hadn’t tried that one and when I did, up came the image. So many thanks for bringing it up.

Thanks for replying. I think I have a grip on this saving stuff now. Is Windows Picture and Fax something that’s on all computers or is that a special software? Just curious, I’m sticking with what I have…I’m confused enough!

I always save mine to my desktop as a .tif file then I move it from my desktop into my genealogy documents folder.

Funny you should mention saving it to your desktop. When I was trying to save an image tonight it ended up on my desktop and I don't know how it got there

Stick with what your comfortable with, as far as I know Windows picture and fax viewer is standard, but then again I use Windos XP Professional edition and Office XP Professional, so I am not actually too sure if it is standard in other Windows platforms

But my system keeps re-setting itself and now it has changed the format I look at my piccies in to Microsoft Office document imaging, but it is not a problem only a different style of viewere

If you don't have Windows Picture and Fax Viewer then a good, free, viewer to use, especially for TIF files, is IRFanview. You can download it here:

http://www.irfanview.com/

Paintshop Pro is OK to use but, with my version anyway, you lose quality on viewing the image and it's hard to read. That doesn't happen with the Picture and Fax Viewer nor with IRFanview.

The way i save mine (mentioned above), when i click them they just open no problem. I dont get asked which prog to open it ect.........just open like a normal file. But maybe being plain ol' XP makes the difference
