Advice required
Who can tell me if parents are shown on a marriage extract 1838? I already have the marriage details I require but would like to confirm the groom's parent's names. Is the ten pound going to be worth it?
Thank you,
Jen
Thank you,
Jen

Hi Jen
OPR marriage entries are very variable. Some helpfully state the father's name, many others will not state any parents at all. some will state the occupation and/or place of residence of one or other of the parties, but again, in most cases, there will be no interesting extra info at all. See:
http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3862
for an example of the type of wording you may find.
Rather than spend £10, you may be better off ordering the OPR film from your local LDS family history centre for a small fee (about £2.50 I think) and having a look at what it says. You can also order a photocopy of the page from the LDS.
best wishes

Hi Jen
Just a personal opinion here but I would say NO. Sometimes the OPR marriage records do contain the info though. But buying the extract from GROS in my experience would have been more expensive than paying for a researcher to obtain a transcription. The sad news
....two times I've had to know and paid for this transcript....and two times I've been disappointed! Perhaps some folks around here might be aware if one area might be more likely to have parents names than another. I think it was down to how much the church registrar liked to write!
Best wishes
Jean

Thank you for the help. The LDS library sounds like my best option. If I have no success with the marriage, how is it possible to verify the parents of a child ensuring you have the correct ancestor?
Thank you,
Jen

Hi Jen
As this couple were married in 1838 then the chances of them surviving until 1855 ar after is very good.
If you can find their death certs on Scotlandspeople and if the informant to the death knew their parents names, then these should be shown on the death cert.
I would look for the female first as you can cross reference the maiden name and married name for her. Once you establish whether she was a widow or not at the time of the death, gives you an indication of dates to look for the death of the male.

Hello Jean,
The name that I am searching parents for is John Hogg - all too common a name. I have just looked at 6 possibilities, at 6 credits a go and have not found him. I found his wife's death in Gladsmuir, where they lived, and though I have not narrowed it to East Lothian - still nothing! This poor man has been without parents for a long time. Wont give up though - well maybe I will tonight - it is 1:47 am.
Thank you for all your help.

Hi Jen
Old Scottish expression.........Don't tell your Granny how to suck eggs!
In other words, if I am telling you someting you already know then please excuse me!
Is John's wife described as widow of John Hogg or wife of John Hogg on her d.c. ? Whichever she is, it will narrow down the dates of your search for John's death.
Did you know that Gladsmuir 1841 and 1851 are on Freecen?
Have you found him in any censuses? This will narrow down the date of death.
Have you found him in 1881? If not let me have his approx date of birth, also his wife's name and date of birth and the names and ages of any children they had and where any of them were born (including John and his wife)

Hello Jean - Here goes.
John Hogg born abt. 1808 in Pencaitland, East Lothian.
Married Marion Fairgrieve 14 Dec 1838 in Penston ELN.
Marion born 13 Jul 1817 in Penston - died 26 May 1886, Gladsmuir
Children.
William 1842
Catherine 1844
Janet 1847
Isabella 6 Dec 1886
Mary 1860.
I have viewed 1861 census and all are living. When Marion died in 1886 she is described as widow of John.
The possible parents I have for John are William Hogg and Catharine Wilson but would like to be able to confirm this. There seemed to be a few John Hoggs around.
Thank you one again for your help.
