Unreadable Signature

Hi, I am new to your site ...it was recommended by a Lanark message board group...I had asked for advice re the above cert.....I downloaded a death cert. of a relative and could only read part of it, so I contacted SP and they kindly sent me a larger version, BUT I still can't read the signature of the son.in.law. ( This would give me a lead as to whom the daughter married , as I have come to a brick wall and need some new leads) How would I go about sending a scan copy of the signature...I haven't done this before,I am still learning this art! Thanks in advance, Betty S

Hi Betty

If you upload the whole image to our gallery it will help to compare handwriting on the whole page and decipher the problem area. If the hard copy that SP mailed to you is more legible than the downloaded one from their website then it would be best for us to see that one. This means you will have to scan it and then save it to your computer. To make this easier to handle I will send you my email address via private message and you can attach the scan to an email and send it to me. I'll then be happy to upload it to the gallery for you and place a link in the post that you just made above.

Sig. looks like Charles R. Walters - though could it be Waltren? Waltress? Watters? Wattrens?
Difficult without any other examples of that person's handwriting.

If you know the name of a daughter to that couple try a search on IGI for a marriage to a likely lad. There is no indicaiton of a year on the area of page uploaded so its difficult to narrow down the search.

My guess would be Charles R Wattress.

Hi Betty,
Like Lesley i don't know the year involved, but there is an 1866 birth in Dundee for -
Charles Robert WATTERS.
But the signature does look like what Catriona says - Charles R WATTRESS.

I was thinking it was Wattress or Watters but not finding anything at all that made sense I went looking for more info. You'll find the marriage of Charles WATKINS and Isabella in Paisley in 1895.

Another line of attack is to look for the marriage register entry between the relevant surname and a Charles R WAL* or WAT*, or is that "R" a "K"?

Crikey - it would have helped if he'd crossed his T on the correct letter!! I can see Watkins now....

but only now I know what is is!!
