How can I apply for a birth certificate when I don't know the exact date? Is there any way I can do some research beforehand without having to get on a plane?

Births After 1955
I'd be grateful if someone could clarify my understanding. If searching for English relatives on 1837online.com I can search for births up to 1983. However, for Scottish relatives the online birth records only go up to 1905. Apparently if I want to see a birth record after 1905 I can apply in person or by post to Edinburgh, but my issue here is that I am not exactly sure of the birthdate of the person I am searching for.
How can I apply for a birth certificate when I don't know the exact date? Is there any way I can do some research beforehand without having to get on a plane?

Hi fallen
Ummmm.....well......you could get on the plane like you've already figured out....or....you could make a nice request on a discussion group forum on the off chance someone might be going to New Reigster House. If you really have no idea at all of when the event occured and it will take some research then you are probably better off paying a researcher to do the work for you. (Much cheaper than a plane ticket
) Unless and until NRH opens up some current record indexes on the world wide web those are the options.
Best wishes

Of course I would be totally remiss
if I didn't also point out to you that TalkingScot is having an online Beach Party June 30 - July 1 during which time there will be some prizewinners of our Tombola drawing announced. You could always expend a small amount for some tickets in the hopes of winning some free lookups at NRH....which could very well help you find what you're seeking!!! Click on the **TalkingScot Tombola** button at the top of the forum for more details.....
Best wishes

Hi Fallen
...and a warm welcome to Talking Scot
If you have a rough idea of when the event occurred you can ask GROS to search for it. Its not free tho'!
Info here:
http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/h ... flet2.html
Again, it rather depends on what time range you can give for the event, the circumstances (sometimes people's lives are more complicated than anticipated - illegitimate children may be registered under their mother's name, those who were adopted will not be found under their adoptive names, sometimes surnames are modified or changed competely etc) and whether the name is going to involve a lot of trawling through records or one that will be fairly easy to spot.
Best wishes

Re: post 1905 births
Hello Fallen,
the indexes, but not images, of births, marriages and deaths later than cut-off dates will be available on SP in the future. Although no definite dates have been given, the User Group minutes from 30 January 2006 state "the coming months". This should help you in your search if you are patient enough to wait.
Regards,
John
