I am a big supporter of SP and they have been very helpful with my research.
Like everyone else I have used credits for the wrong results.

On the Census forms when the family is at the bottom of the page and you are unsure if the same family continues on the following page is there any way to identify this without using a further 5 credits.

I am still in favour of an annual subscription.

Hi Wini

At the end of each household the enumerator should draw a line across the page. Soooooo if there is a line at the bottom of the page then the household is complete. If there isn't a line then there should be more folks on the next page. Of course, the enumerator could have been forgetful or careless and omitted to draw a line :!:

Jean

PS Have a look at some of your censuses and see for yourself

Hi Wini

In the later censuses, it's impossible to determine, without spending that further 5 credits, I'm afraid.

Often, enumerators didn't carry over a household from one page to the next, but some did exactly that !, so that looking at the following page, or, the previous page, can be a necessity..............

On the earlier censuses there is most often is a diagonal stroke between households, on the vertical line to the right of the "Name", a single such stroke meaning the delineation between different "Households" at the same address, with a double such diagonal stroke meaning different Households at a different address, so that, in the absence of such an annotation, it can relied on that there isn't any such following/preceding page information, except that this can never be relied on ...............

Hi Wini

Have a look at this link and see the enumerators instructions for 1841 - 1871. This may give you a clearer idea.

See also here on TS at http://www.talkingscot.com/censuses/census-intro.htm for most of the enumerators' instructions. (In fact it was a joint project between the FreeCen Scottish co-ordinator and TS to hunt down and get a full set of the instructions once we'd exchanged those that we each had.)

FreeCen is good for the tips and hints to transcribers. Under Transcriber FAQs there's also a wealth of information for those interested in this level of detail.

Just realised that no-one's mentoned what happens at NRH when a 50p copy has to be two such, because a household is spread over 2 pages, - the charge is reduced to just 50p, - the principle being that you're paying for a copy of an entry, not per page.

While it would be neat to have the same pronciple applied on SP, I can't think of any way that an equivalent procedure could be set up on SP.........

Thanks David & Jean

I have been away for a couple of days.

Your advice noted.

I was just having a grizzle because I had 2 in a row that I wanted to check if there was any more family staying with them as I have noticed that extended family seem to end up with the Head of the Household.
One case was listed as Adopted son who was 11years old and the Head was 80 and he died within the Census year surely not a suitable parent.
