IS HANDWRITING GENETIC?

Post by wini » Thu Aug 24, 2006 12:14 pm

I have been sending copies of certificates I have downloaded from SP to a cousin.
He has been struck by the similarity in the handwriting of our GG Grandfather David Munro and his father also David Munro.

Do you reckon there is any chance of handwriting being in your genes.

Your post intrigued me as I have always been told that my handwriting is very similar to my father's and I know that his father's signature looked very similar to his handwriting.

Maybe there is a genetic trait, who knows?

However, neither my brother nor my sister write anything like any of us?

There is a huge similarity between mine and my gt gt grandmothers writing. Over the years my neat italic writing has morphed into neat scrawl :)
There is also a very distinctive "D" that seems to have passed down :?
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Yup!!

Got to admit - things I wrote years ago are far neater :(

Also, with me, it isn't just some letters that are very similar. Even now, if I write my maiden name that, even more than anything else, could quite easily be mistaken for my father's handwriting.

My sister, same name as Mum's was very adept at forging Mum's signature on absent notes for school.
I have noticed my Father's beautiful handwriting is very similiar to his Great-Grandfather's.

Now why didn't I think of that at the time

What you say is true, my handwriting is very much like my mothers, and developed after I left school and wrote things as I wanted to. I was never very good at the script writing and it always looked messy. So after school age I tended to write more backhand and over the years it now looks very much like my mums.
My dads handwriting is very much like his mums. So perhaps its more a visual thing, of what we tend to see more off ?????

Interesting though :)

My handwriting was very similar to my mums, I always thought it was because of two things. She was the one that helped with my homework when I was a bairn in Scotland learning to write, and when I was in the navy of course she wrote to me often. (and often included a stamped self addressed envelope  ) So perhaps I copied her style of writing, as opposed to forging her signature on school notes, my mum could write my signature better than I could

Unfortunately the navy communications got me into the bad habit of writing all things in capitals  Which I am still much quicker at doing now than long hand, even at uni my notes were all in capitals  Very neat but still.
