I'm in Direct Download but cannot save files - help please.

Post by Jockbird » Fri Mar 30, 2007 1:45 pm

Apols if I should just be in the Computer section but I don't know what to do!

Normally when I go into SP and download my files I don't have a problem (albeit it's been a few weeks since I've had the time to do anything).

Today I went in and tried to save a certificate on a previous search. Instead of the file opening in my photo software of ACDSee, it opened in Quicktime and this does not give me the facility to save....well not that I can see anyway.

Now I got round it by changing the My Details section on SP to Java and Active X and it works in both, albeit longwinded, however, I'd really like to go back to Direct Download and just be able to save my docs.

I've no idea where the Quicktime appeared from but we have just installed new HP Printer, so whether it came with that I don't know, so I am loathe to uninstall Quicktime......the question is though, how do I get back to ACDSee being the default software it opens up in?

If any of you brainy folk can help this wee ignoramous then I'd be very grateful!

Many thanks
Donna

Donna,
On the page which gives you the information on the file that you want to open e.g.

SMITH JOHN (Statutory Deaths 625/01 0192) 90Kb

Right click on this and then click "Save Target As", you can then save your file.

Hope this helps.

Hi Donna,

I get the same problem when I update a couple of other programs on my PC, the biggest culprit, though there are a few others, being iTunes

I don't use ACDSee, but do use AlternaTIFF. Every time this happens, I just reinstall that and all goes back to normal.

You can tell Quicktime to stop being "default" but it's a persistent little blighter and sometimes reasserts itself when you reboot, so I gave up doing that.

Hi Mary & Merlot,

Many thanks for your replies.

I've just tried your wee trick Merlot & I managed to get it to work, thank you! :)

Thanks for your help too Mary, I'm loathe to uninstall/reinstall things as I am inept when it comes to computers  ....they just see me coming! That said my husband possesses the family computer literacy braincell so I may well get him to try that but I think at the mo Merlot's wee trick should do it.

Thanks girls,
Donna

Thanks Andrew,

My husband had taken the computer braincell to work with him, in fact all the family braincells, so it was a case of 'fools rush in!'

All the best

Hi Donna

I can sympathise with the wee problem you had. The other day I re-installed a photo editing programme I have had for years, and the thing has taken over, whenever I download an image from any source it saves it that format. Problem is even though it is an old programme, it is an excellent photo image editing programme and lets me retouch photo's nicely.
