Married - Maiden names

Post by Jack » Fri Jun 03, 2005 12:16 pm

Hi Folks,

When searching SP for a woman's DC using 2 names,

Is the Surname:* for her married name? and the Other Surnames: for her maiden?

For eg - married name Jean Smith, ms Jones.
Would the number of hits also give those with the married name of Jean Jones, ms Smith?

Thanks for any advice - Jack

Hi Jack,

I was assuming it did not matter. That is certainly the case in New Register House. It should pull together any combination that matches both surnames on the same certificate.

All the best,

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

I'd the feeling it might be that - so it makes for a lot of unwanted name combinations.
But i know this can't be helped as many women's DCs have a variety of names mentioned - they aren't all straightforward.

Thanks - Jack

Hullo Jack and Andrew

It seems that where one puts the woman's maiden name matters. When I put one of my ancestors maiden names under "surname" and her married name under "other names", she wasn't to be found. Changed the names over and Hey Presto!

I did a similar test and found that it didn't matter which name was in which search box. The mystery deepens...

Hi Catriona & Andrew,

I did some searches with some of the "less common" married & maiden names that had only one match, and it didn't matter which box i put the names into.
So unless the maiden name was known you wouldn't be able to tell until the image was looked at.

So same result that you got Andrew, but what about yours Catriona? Very odd.

Hello Catriona,

your problem occurred during the first round of testing a couple of months ago, in that a combination of names gave different results depending on the order. This was fixed by Oracle (the database used by SP) for the second round of tests, and all my tests gave the same results no matter what the order.

If the problem is reproducible, please send a contact form to SP.

Regards,

John

Could it be that first time around, I missed out or added a letter to the name? That's something I'm perfectly capable of.

Admittedly my sample size is only 1, but the example I worked up for the on-line seminars down here worked both ways round..........
