Does anyone know if it is possible to find out if my grandfather Andrew McGowan DOB 9/4/1884 from Lanarkshire served in World War 1.

Regards,
Audrey

Hullo there

Have you any idea of his date of death? Do you think he may have been killed or wounded during the WW1? There is an Andrew Mcgowan on the Commonwealth War Graves sight, but information about him is sparce.

The Scottish National War Memorial website gives 3 Andrew McGowans who died in WWI.

Audrey and Andrew,
I notice that two of the Andrew McGowans on the SN War Memorial site are the same person. He changed regiments at one point.

No problem, Audrey.

It has been mentionned on several occasions on the forum that it's a more difficult task to find out information about someone who served but survived the war. I'm not sure how and if we can help you with this one. Let's hope there is someone more knowledgeable around!

All the best

Audrey

You could try this link let me know if it doesn't work http://www.documentsonline.nationalarch ... ueryType=1
There are 11 entries so it would help if you knew what regiment he served in.

Another source would be the local newspapers of the time?
Do you know where in Lanarkshire he was staying at the time?
Burns, Quinn - Glasgow, N.Ireland
McLeod, Mackay, Nicholson, McNeil - Skye
James, McLeod, Sinclair, Smith - Renton
Davidson,Adie, Gibb - Aberdeen
Jolly Wishart - Angus
Usher - Newcastle
Mullen, Roe - Dublin
O'Donnell - Ireland, Alexandria

Hi Audrey

Did your grandfather have any children born during WW1? If so, on their birth certs it could have his rank and number. I chanced across this with my G.Grandfather, my grandmother was born after the war but when visiting NRH I looked for her siblings and lo and behold found my G.Grandfather listed as Private 23855 Blackwatch on her brother's birth cert.
Sue

Rellies include: Watson, Campbell, Erskine, Kennedy (All Airdrie area)
