Drew,
by a farrier I am presuming this was one who put shoes on horses! Unlikely in this case I think as my AF Mitchell was a pharmacist's apprentice in the 1901 census. Presumably a farrier would have been more likely to have come from a farming background which he didn't have for a few generations back. As to the other tip about Banchory I will look into that. Meantime I'd love to hear if you do any good in Banchory. Thanks - again

Hello Margaret
Try an e-mail to: Admin@lightinfantry.org.uk. They may be able to help you. This body or other links should be able to provide information regarding campaigns that were undertaken. It might help if you mention that you are an Australian. Most people have a soft spot for Australian's. Especially if you let us win the Ashes series.
If you know your dad's army number it will help you alot whatever archive rescource you come across.
Alcluith mentioned that many records have been lost. This is true. They were destroyed by a single bomb delivered by the Luftwaffe during wwII. However, many archives remain and are held at Kew, including those of my own grandfather,Corporal Harry Morris who was in the Scottish Dragoon Guards. They make a fascinating read and well worth finding. Unfortunately, you can't do this on-line but as detailed in the lower section of Douglas's communication there are local people who will do some searching for a fee. I believe this is the only way you can get the service record you want.
This won't help you i know, but my own contact local to the National Archive centre recently upped sticks and went to Australia for a year. From what she says, we might never see her again.

Hello there Malcom
Whats this about us letting you win the cricket, I think the Poms are going to show us just how good you are.
I have finally found my Dad's army number,( would you beleive my brother knew it all the time just forgot to tell me
) so will send a letter off and see what I can find out.
As for your friend coming to Aussie, guess you will have to save your pennies and come on down it really is a grand place.

G'day mate (i've been following your news)
Your lot certainly had us on edge on Sunday. Even my toe nails are down to the quick!
You might have tried this but if you enter www.Highland Light Infantry.uk.com you will come accross a wealth of information about your dad's old regiment. Like many others, it has been amalgamated and as at thirty minutes ago it was The Royal Highland Fusiliers. If that seems cynical it's because our politicians habit of wiping out old regiments is a sore point up here.
Sue Erskine mentioned that you can obtain your dad's medal card at www.nationalarchives.gov.uk . From memory this costs six pounds. If you are inclined to spend a few quid however, it might be better to pay a local archivist at Kew for a limited search to see if a service record exists. If it does, any medal awards will be shown. There's no point in paying twice.

I have found a few possible leads in the web-sites mentioned - can anyone tell me if the Scottish records are kept at National Archives in Edinburgh , or are they all at Kew ?
Morag
Which Scottish records ??
If you mean military records, then the main archive is The National Archives at Kew.
National Archives of Scotland holds very few military records after 1707 apart from some militia records. Scottish regimental archives can be helpful with additional info, e.g. WW1 scrapbooks and earlier regimental newsletters, but Kew is the place to start.
