Royal Scots Fusiliers
Hello, I have a marriage certificate for Samuel Allan Clark, and Jessie Boyce, that states that he was a private in the Royal Scots Fusiliers, this was in 1916, does anyone know where I can obtain a service record for him? I think that at some point he was wounded, as his name appears on the ASH website [he was from Ardrossan], to confuse things, sometimes his name is spelt with an E and sometimes not, any help appreciated, Regards Del.

Re: Royal Scots Fusiliers
Hello Del,
About two thirds of WW1 British Army service records were destroyed during WW2 bombing. What has survived plus some pension records has been digitised and is available at Ancestry and probably elsewhere.
In addition there are the campaign medal card indexes which have also been digitised and are available from the National Archives site. Ancestry also has these but with the reverse side of the card as well which can sometimes have extra info.
If I search the NA medal card site for a Samuel Clark* in the Royal Scots Fusiliers I get these two:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/docu ... ultcount=2
Medal card of Clark, Samuel
1/4th Royal Scots Fusiliers 8407 Private
1/4th Royal Scots Fusiliers 200759 Private
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/docu ... ultcount=2
Medal card of Clarke, Samuel
1/4th Royal Scots Fusiliers 8313 Private
1/4th Royal Scots Fusiliers 200701 Private
4/5th Royal Scots Fusiliers 3124475 Warrant Officer Class 2
The Territorial Force Infantry were renumbered in 1917 and that would be the reason for the new numbers starting 200*. The British Army was renumbered in 1920 and the Royal Scots Fusiliers given the series from 3122001 to 3178000. That suggests to me that the second fellow was still in the army in 1920 in which case his records may still be with the Ministry of Defence.
There’s a bit about the 1/4th Battalion here.

You would need to look at the records on Ancestry etc to see if anything there matches your fellow.
Hope that helps,
Alan

Re: Royal Scots Fusiliers
Both of these fellows were wounded, there’s a next-of-kin address for one.
The Scotsman, 19 Dec. 1917.
WOUNDED.
Royal Scots Fus. Clark, 200759, S. (Irvine);
(part of a long list, the town shown is home of next-of-kin)
The Scotsman, 03 Sep. 1915.
CORRECTION.
WOUNDED.
R.S.F., 4th Bat. (T.F.)—Clarke, 8813, S., should read R.S.F., 4th Bat. (T.F.) —Clarke, 8313, S.

Re: Royal Scots Fusiliers
Hello Del,
There are also some military records on Find My Past but the only mention of the Royal Scots Fusiliers I can see is for a Private Samuel Clarke, Service No. 5330 born c 1878 in Glasgow. He was invalided out in 1898 due to an Embolism. Next of Kin was his mother Margaret of 43 Soho St., Glasgow and brother John.
As Allan mentioned, a lot of records were destroyed and by the looks of things most of mine must have been destroyed - 'cause I'm not finding many of my own lot.
Regards,
Anne H

Thanks Alan, and Anne H, I see that Ancestry are giving free access to service records, pension records and medal cards, between 10th and 13th november, so I will have a search around then, Thanks for your replies, Regards Del.

Re: Royal Scots Fusiliers
Hi
My name is Sandra Macdonald and I noted your posting on here regarding a Samuel Clarke. Is this the same Samuel Clarke the son of William & Sarah Clarke (nee Martin) that was born in Ireland about 1860?
Regards
Sandra
