East and (West) Lothian Cavalry Revisited

Post by Clanchattan » Mon Dec 19, 2011 7:09 pm

Hi everyone,
I refer to previous posts by Scooter (24/11/ 2009), myself (10/03/2011), and Johnmac (02/07/2011) on the above subject.

I had tremendous help from Scooter et al in answer to my original post and even had a private email from Scott showing that his relative and mine were in the same troop. A more recent look at the information shows that it was indeed for the East & West Lothian Cavalry. This may in some way explain why my ancestor James McIntosh born c.1769 in Edinburgh joined the Regiment.

So when Johnmac’s post reintroduced the topic I was delighted to find another member of my ancestors unit. I have a copy of the places visited by the regiment in 1800 and Johnmacs date of 21st April 1800 for the discharge, at Durham, of his Gx3 grandfather, coincides exactly with my information.

As I live fairly near Durham and often visit, in fact my Mother’s family come from there, I have emailed Johnmac directly and exchanged information. A lot of his family details are on the IGI, and he can trace his family back to at least 1730 in Baldernock Scotland, - no mean feat.

When I visited Kew I thought I was only looking at the East only records and was intrigued by the reference to Brechin. However as Scooter stated the regiment spent time in Montrose (near Brechin ) in 1795. In addition one of Johnmac’s posts refers to the regiment visiting Montrose and his relative being “On Command” at Brechin. This was at the same time as my ancestor was “Absent” with Brechin in the “Comments” column.

Is (or was ) there a barracks at Brechin and a regiment based there? Could it be that James was visiting relatives (other McIntoshes) in the area when he was absent? I found the following family in the IGI :- William McIntosh and Euphane (nee Hutton) with children Mary (b 1786), & William (b 1789) birth place Dundee, David (b 1794) birth place St Andrews, and Jean Brown (b 1796), Euphan (b 1797), & Summer Blair (b 1800) birth place Brechin. Indicating that the family moved around - Military Service?

Also given that the Regiment disbanded in 1800 and James’s children were not born until 1807 did he join another regiment, possibly based at Brechin?

Another interesting coincidence is that both Scooter’s and Johnmac’s ancestors were both Whitesmiths after their careers in the Cavalry.

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Happy Christmas and Successful Searching in 2012

Gordon

Hello Gordon, and a Merry Christmas to you and yours.

I couldn’t find anything about soldiers being in Brechin except for the Brechin Volunteers. That’s not to say that detachments from various regiments weren’t stationed there from time to time.

The History of Brechin, published 1867, has reference to military matters in Brechin on pages 172-173 and 182.

Also there’s a brief mention here giving 1794 as the establishment date.

There are a couple of early references in the London Gazette.

And in the newspapers:

Caledonian Mercury, (Edinburgh), Monday, August 24, 1801
Brechin Volunteers agree to extend service to any part of GB, in case of invasion.

Lloyd's Evening Post , (London), April 11, 1804
Brechin Volunteers offer to go on permanent duty for any period of time to any part of GB.

Caledonian Mercury (Edinburgh), Monday, October 21, 1805
Mention of a parade of NCOs and Privates of the Brechin Volunteers. Lieut. Col. Mollison was their C.O. and Chief Magistrate of the City.

A search at the National Archives site brings up some results.

Hope that helps a bit,
Alan

Hi Alan,
Many thanks for your continuing help. I'm currently working through your suggestions. I've tried Angus Archives and received a nice reply but no luck on James or the East lothian Cavalry. I've also retried the National Archives and found plenty of "old soldiers" mentioned as being ex the ELC. I guess, as we concluded before, he wasn't a regular soldier. The missing years from when the regiment disbanded in 1800 to the birth of their first child in 1807 is still puzzling.
All the Best to You and Yours,
Regards Gordon.
Currently too mild in the UK for a White Christmas this year!
