I refer to previous posts by Scooter (24/11/ 2009), myself (10/03/2011), and Johnmac (02/07/2011) on the above subject.
I had tremendous help from Scooter et al in answer to my original post and even had a private email from Scott showing that his relative and mine were in the same troop. A more recent look at the information shows that it was indeed for the East & West Lothian Cavalry. This may in some way explain why my ancestor James McIntosh born c.1769 in Edinburgh joined the Regiment.
So when Johnmac’s post reintroduced the topic I was delighted to find another member of my ancestors unit. I have a copy of the places visited by the regiment in 1800 and Johnmacs date of 21st April 1800 for the discharge, at Durham, of his Gx3 grandfather, coincides exactly with my information.
As I live fairly near Durham and often visit, in fact my Mother’s family come from there, I have emailed Johnmac directly and exchanged information. A lot of his family details are on the IGI, and he can trace his family back to at least 1730 in Baldernock Scotland, - no mean feat.
When I visited Kew I thought I was only looking at the East only records and was intrigued by the reference to Brechin. However as Scooter stated the regiment spent time in Montrose (near Brechin ) in 1795. In addition one of Johnmac’s posts refers to the regiment visiting Montrose and his relative being “On Command” at Brechin. This was at the same time as my ancestor was “Absent” with Brechin in the “Comments” column.
Is (or was ) there a barracks at Brechin and a regiment based there? Could it be that James was visiting relatives (other McIntoshes) in the area when he was absent? I found the following family in the IGI

Also given that the Regiment disbanded in 1800 and James’s children were not born until 1807 did he join another regiment, possibly based at Brechin?
Another interesting coincidence is that both Scooter’s and Johnmac’s ancestors were both Whitesmiths after their careers in the Cavalry.
Any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks,
Happy Christmas and Successful Searching in 2012
