I have a photo of my grandparents in which my grandad is wearing a uniform. I am curious to know what it is. I estimate it as sometime in the late 1930's, early 1940's because my uncle looks about 12 he was born 1926. I have not been able to find records for him on Ancestry in either of the ww's. He was born in 1897 so only about 17 when ww1 broke out and obviously a bit older for ww2.
I know I cannot ask for help with looking at the photo because of the age but does any one know of a good site where I might be able to identify the uniform, and/or anywhere I can look for his army record. I remember my Dad saying he was in the army sometime during ww1. (and also some talk of him being in the Navy) - is this possible to interchange?
thank you
Helen

For any WWI queries, try the Great War forum at http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forum ... hp?act=idx where you will find a great number of incredibly knowledgable folk.

Hello Helen,
If you like you could post the photo on photobucket. Someone here may be able to identify the uniform. Some are fairly easy to identify, others may require more specialised knowledge. In the circumstances I don’t really see why you shouldn’t be able to try TS first. Post also your grandfathers full name and date and place of birth and 1911 address and occupation if possible and if there were any hints passed down as to his regiment.
I’m not aware of any TS rules that would prevent you from providing a link to a photobucket photo containing the image of an unnamed individual no matter of what age. You would have to do precisely that on the other forums mentioned. I’m not sure whether you’re reluctant to post it because of the birth date of your uncle or because of the date of the photograph. Maybe Admin could clarify and provide some reasons if there’s a problem.
If he was still a soldier in the 1930s his records would be with Ministry of Defence. There’s some info about that here. http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/About ... sonnel.htm
Have you tried WW1 Medal Index Cards at National Archives and Ancestry?
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/docu ... medals.asp
As to a sort of Army-Navy mix:
The Royal Naval Division consisted of sailors who fought in the trenches. If you think that’s a possibility you could try here. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/reco ... vision.htm
Then there’s the Royal Marines. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/reco ... arines.htm
All the best,
Alan

Hi Alan,
I don't believe there would be a problem with putting a link to photobucket on TS nor would their be a problem with the age.
Helen sent me the details and I had a look on FMP but came up empty handed...hopefully Helen will have some luck with the links you provided.
Regards,
Anne H

Hi Alan,
I've looked on Ancestry before but thought I'd have another go. Used phonetic this time, brought up several other James Glackens. There may be a possible - James 'Glackan' in the British Army WW1 Medal Rolls Index. No address unfortunately. I am a bit ignorant regarding the military. Does anyone know what would determine which regiment a soldier would be posted to? This chap is in The Kings Own Scottish Borderers, Labour Corps. My grandfather is from Edinburgh.
Will be having a look sometime over the weekend when I have the time, at photo bucket. Seems like a good idea.
all the best
