Enlisted in ?

Post by Heather » Thu Jul 04, 2013 7:20 pm

Looking for some ideas please.

I have a Short Service Record for a young man that served from 1895 until 1904. The entry in 1904
states that he was Dischard on the termination of his first period of engagement. It is followed
by another entry dated 20 Jul 1907. It looks to me like " Enlisted in Sec D" but can't be sure that
it says "Sec D". Wondering if anyone can make anything of this ? If it is is "Sec D" - what would that
have been ? If there is any connection his time from 1895 to 1904 was with the Argyll & Sutherland
Highlanders, much of the time served was in India.

Any ideas, hints ~ thoughts will be much appreciated. I've been trying to figure this one out for
a few years now. Portion of the document in question is attached.

Thanks :D

Hello Heather,

I reckon this would be it.

Section D Reserve
For men who had completed their time in Section B Reserve. They could choose to extend for another four years and were placed in Section D Reserve. terms, pay and training was the same as Section B.

Thank you Alan,

Do you have any idea or suggestion how I might track him any further in "Section D" Reserve ?
This is my last crumb on him and never have been able to track him any further ?

Hello Heather,

Are you sure you have all the pages of records from where you got the service record. Some of the databases can be confusing, can’t remember which, and you need to check backwards as well as forwards.

According to what’s on this link once the Section D Reserve service was completed the soldier’s regimental number was discarded. http://armyservicenumbers.blogspot.com.au/

Is it possible he may have joined up again during WW1 and been given another number and some of his older records ended up with the WW1 records. You probably know that about two thirds of those were destroyed during WW2 bombing and if he didn’t serve in a theatre of war overseas there would be no record of him in the medal card index.

All the best,
Alan
