soldiers... death certs ?.....

Post by meelymunch » Thu Sep 29, 2005 11:05 pm

Evening all.
I just recieved a copy of my grandparents marriage cert they were married in Nottingham in 1935. I was hoping it would help me go backwards in my grandads family but it only gives me his fathers name. My grandad died in action 1943 , a soldier in WW2 and was buried in Tunisia. My question is would there be a regular death cert for him that might give me his mothers name as well..... or was it different for soldiers etc serving abroad and dying abroad?
Cheers,Carole.

Hi Carole
Have you looked at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web site at:
http://www.cwgc.org/

Sometimes names of parents are given there. Maybe worth a try if you've not already checked.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Carole

Probably this is too simple to mention but did your grandad have any siblings and was he or they born in England or Scotland? If you know his age then you could guesstimate a reasonable marriage window for his parents and then search on just his father's name......but I'm not knowing if that is feasible.......just how unusual of a name are you working with?

Best wishes
Jean
