Hello Maureen

Have you tried looking here for more info ?
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/search.asp
Put the name you have in the search box and where it says series or code put wo. If you find them it should tell you the basics. This is an example of one of mine........................

WO 97/581/17 WILLIAM RANKIN Born GAMRIE, Banffshire Served in 42nd Foot Regiment; 92nd Foot Regiment Discharged aged 39 1828-1849

If you find the deceased soldier on here it will at least give you a year to base your death date from.

If you really want to know more ie where they served you will have to send of for the document.

Happy hunting
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

The Crimean War was from 1854 - 1856.

There's an index of all those who took part, 90% complete last time I checked a year ago at http://www.wolstadt.demon.co.uk/ - pay per search basis.

Apart from home service, and that inluded Ireland, as the country was then the United Kingdom of Britain and Ireland, the British Army were all over the world in the 1850s and 1870s. http://www.regiments.org/wars/bhindex.htm gives as good an idea as any site on possible locations. This lists battle honours, but remember that the army would have been in many other places as well on garrison duty.

Hi Maureen,

Please mind that Alexander "MATHIE"'s wife Elizabeth LETHAM was as a widow in 1851.
No reason to suspect she wasn't!

Hi Jack,
I seem to have moved around on the forums but you still found me.
Yes I am aware that Elizabeth is widow in 1851 and that makes me think he went to fight as a soldier as I have uplifted two death certs
for Ann Hart and Janet Graham both nee Mathie and one states Alexander as soldier.
I will return to our original forum regards this and up date you.
Cheers
Maureen

Hi Maureen

Note that the fact that someone does not appear in the online catalogue for the National Archives does not mean that there is not a record. Having said, that my undestanding is that the records relate mostly to men who survived to draw a pension. As I said on another forum I found a lot of info about my kids' 3x great grandfather who was in the Royal Artillery in the 1840s to 1860s and served in South Africa and the Crimea. He is not listed in the catalogue. If a man drew his pension then I believe there is likely to be a record at TNA.

There were also the two Opium wars with China, 1839-34 and 1856-60.
