U.S.A.Civilian Draft Registration Cards 1917-1918.....
In 1917-1918 approximately 24million men living in the U.S.A. compleated a registration card. This represented 98% of men under the age of 46 and close to 25% of the total population. As of 15th november this info is now free for downloading from Ancestry.com.

This is a great source of info, if you punch in the surname and proceed to bottom of first page printed.Type in country of origin "Scotland" and all young Scotsmen who arrived into the U.S.A. with that surname with there dates of birth, and were they were living at date of registration is shown
If you want to take it further from the same source,it will cost you,but you can find sometimes the fathers birthplace and the nearest relative.
I found SIX relatives just by looking at the initial printouts in 30min's.
It's a great source for trying to trace those names you can not find, and you thought they might have emigrated to the U.S.A. between the late 1800's and very early 1900"s
I wish you all as good a luck as I had.

Re: war records
Hello all,
many thanks for the link.
If you explore from that first screen, you will find other records that are free for a limited period. They include WW2 draft and PoW records.
Happy hunting (but the scans for my lot are of dreadful quality).
Regards,
John

Tracey.
What ever you do' DO NOT SIGN UP' you will probally find that you are on the next draft to IRAQ.
Hit the URL and a window will come up for World war 1 Draft Registration Cards 1917-1918
In were it says last name include the name of relative you are looking for.
A cartload of names should come up,Ignore all the names shown and go to bottom of this page there you will find a slot for Birthplace, type in Scotland and Voila! only the names of those born in Scotland show up.
Tracey please forgive me if i seem patronizing in my remarks to you, its always so easy for the one giving the advise, when they have the content in front of them.I did make a mistake when i said THE COUNTRY OF ORIGIN All it says is BIRTHPLACE.

Please patronise away i dont care, if it helps, im thicker skinned than most and it goes straight over my head where it belongs.
I may be having the same problem as some when Ancestry decided to allow you to view the 1901 census free. Some couldnt because they were still getting the "Sign Up" but at least then you had the option to view through genesre. Didnt affect me as i had an Ancestry sub, now run out.
Will give it another go but have a glass of red since the last try so i may yet end up in serving in Iraq ................watch this space or the 10 0,clock news
Forgot to say .............yes the names do come up and when i click to view thats when i am asked to sign up re above 1901 census problem.
