WW1 Resource.....

Post by Jamboesque » Thu Dec 01, 2005 6:55 pm

I've been trying to find out what my Grandad got up to during the Great War.
Apart from shouting "Send Three and Fourpence, we're going to a Dance" I seem to remember him saying to me. :D

I have come across an informative site for those investigating this period

http://www.1914-1918.net/ The Long, Long Trail

I don't know if this has been mentioned on here before but it does have loads of info, maps, bio's etc.

Possibliy the most useful part is the message board, where there is not much about WW1 that is not discussed. They are really strong in the area of medals and decorations.
There is even a section whereby you can ask, nicely, nicely if you please that if someone is going to the Nation Archives in London they can do a quick look up for you on a medal record for instance.

Maybe we could put the site into the Sources part of TalkingScots?
I'd like to be apathetic but I really can't be bothered.

Looking for blacksheep & not finding any with
Groats & Stevensons in Orkney, Hood's in Dundee/Angus, Mclaren's in Clackmannan and Jolly's in Kincardineshire. There may be more!

For those members who haven't come across this before, what happened on one occasion in the trenches in Flanders was that a message was given verbally to one man who passed it on to another and so on and on...........

The original message was "Send reinforcements, we're going to advance"
