WW1 records from SP.....

Post by Joan » Mon Jan 02, 2006 9:48 pm

Hi everyone,

I wonder if anyone can tell me what kind of info I would get if I ordered the following record from SP. "1915 FRASER ROBERT M 45
SERVICE AND WAR RETURNS /MINOR RECORDS 122/AF 0177"

I believe this record may be my great uncle but I am unable to find a listing which I can say is definitely him on CWGC. Lots of Robert Frasers without an age are given.

On the SP records will it have his regiment? Or failing that the place where he was killed?

I don't want to order it to find out I'm no further forward.

Thanks
Joan

Hi Joan,

The information on the Minor Records (Service and War Returns) is very limited. Normally it is a name, rank, number, regiment (or the like), cause of death and date of death. It is not a death certificate in the normal sense, so there is not usually information about home address or parents. The cause of death can be vague - killed in action, or missing in action are quite common causes of death.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

The SP record won't show much but it should show regiment, place of death, whether kia or died of wounds etc.

See also Tracey's note re the records at The National Archives at Kew.............

Had a look anyway

All the Robert Frasers in BT are too early to be yours
One on WO Robert Fraser Ross too late and too many Robert Fraser,s in the WW1 Campaign medals to go through and not much help unless you know which regiment he was in.

Thanks everyone

I had looked at the NA but wthout his regiment I was stumped. From what I have (having spend a fortune on SP) the Robert Fraser I have found on SP must be him. I know he was born in 1870 in Fife and dead by 1917. I guess I'll have to stump up to get his regiment. Was going to go to Kew tomorrow but will wait til SP deliver the goods.

Thanks again for your help

On CWWG site there are only three Robert Frasers and one R. Fraser who all died in 1915. One of them isnt him as he is aged 30 at time of death. So that leaves 3. The R Fraser has some information - Brother of Mr. J. Fraser, of The Fore, Rafford, Forres, Morayshire so that narrows it down to 2 ! :D
Of the two that are left one was a Lance Corporal in Black Watch, the other a Private in the Highland Light Infantry.

edit ......Missed putting Highland before Light Infantry

Thanks Tracey
I think that it will be the Black Watch Fraser, at the time his brother John (my grandad) was in the Black Watch. Historically folk from Fife joined the BW. I'll have another look at the NA site - I never noticed the one you have.
Cheers

These were on CWWGC site but now maybe you can narrow your search at TNA when you go :?
