Doing a Google on ' "croix de guerre" "UK recipients" wwII ' only produces a small number of hits, but I suspect that the use of French as opposed to English might help the search, - as, BTW, might well the name of your ancestor.

One of the TS moderators has lived in France for a few decades and will hopefully pick up on this post :!:

Hello GailMc

If you put Croix de Guerre in the word or phrase box on here http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp it brings back quite a bit although im not sure how much will be of use as i havnt gone through it all. Im not sure if your looking for information on the medal or the man that recieved it :?

Thanks Tracey - It is information about what he did to deserve the medal that I am interested in but I will keep the web site in mind as it seems a good on to search on for various things

Gail,

I think you may well find that the Croix de Guerre was sometimes awarded to entire battalions. I know this happened to some soldiers who fought in Belgium and were given it by the Belgian government.
Sorry if I've disappointed you!
