Anyone have any idea what regiment someone might join in 1840's Angus. Alternatively what was the procedure to join the Navy?

Angus is very much Black Watch country, but then my Montrose ancestor signed up with the Cameron Highlanders. It all depended on which regiment had a recruiting party in the area, - the same with the RN.

If it was the RN there was also the possibility he was pressed into service after imbibing in a few too many of the singing syrups
