Hello Maggie
I have just had a look and i cant make out a regiment. I can only read the obvious. Have you tried searching for this man on
www.nationalarchives.gov.uk ? if you strike lucky it may shed some light if no one else can dechiper it

No great mystery, - regiments were permitted to recruit all over the country back then.

Hi Maggie and David,
I also suspect it is the 2nd South Lancashire..
The 2nd Battalion were stationed in Natal (Kwa-Zulu Natal) between 1884 and 1887.
Your letter is dated 13/4/86.....There is "P.M. Burg" above the date
I think this may be
Pietermaritzburg in South Africa

Jim
researching
McIntyre, Menzies, Cowley, Pearson, Copland, McCammond, Forbes, Edgar etc. in Scotland
Skinner in Northumberland
