JAMES & HANNAH DOBIE/DOBBIE

Post by garibaldired » Thu May 25, 2006 10:27 am

Hi Everyone,

I could do with some help here please!
James & Hannah Dobie/Dobbie are to be found in Lasswade, Midlothian in 1841 with 6 of their children. His age is given as 58, hers 50; he was born Midlothian, she in England.
He was dead by 1851 and she died in 1875 in Newtongrange Newbattle, Midlothian. From her death certificate I have confirmed her maiden name of York. I can find no record of their marriage anywhere.
Apart from from one daughter's dc which gives James' occupation as army pensioner, all other documents refer to him as a miner.
There is a James Dobbie to be found at the National Archives, served in the 78th Foot Regiment, discharged aged 33 (covering dates 1801 - 1814), born Carrington. Is this a reasonable long shot (remembering it's going to cost me £10!)? What sort of record will I get here? Will it give a date and place of marriage, always supposing he married while serving?

Sorry I have rambled on rather. Hope it makes sense?

I'll answer my own post as no one else has!!
I paid a visit to Kew and found this James Dobie's records but it hasn't really taken me forward. It did make interesting reading and as there were just 3 page cost me 75p instead of the aforementioned £10!
It tells me he was born in Carrington, Midlothian and was 19 when he enlisted, served 14yrs 6 mths until 1814 when he was 33. This gives a DOB of c1781. This all fits with the 1841 census when he is reported as 58. However the only James Dobie birth I can find for then is the child of Thomas Dobbie/Margaret Daugue. These names don't fit with the naming pattern;that would suggest a parentage of Samuel Dobie/ Mary Ann.
Am I trying to tie up too many things here?

Did you also look at the WO series containing pension records?

David,

I looked at WO 97 to give me his service and pension details but that was all the personal info I could extract from them.
