WW1 Australian Army

Why would a young man from Scotland sign up for the Australian Army? I am not trying to be funny but was it another way to ultimately emigrate? By the way the National Archives in Australia have made a lot of information available on the web.

Because he'd actually emigrated?

I'd need to consult an expert on whether there are known instances of someone signing up or being drafted to the British Army being posted to an Australian unit.

Thanks David I am just curious. On his ( and his brother's) application it states that he was still serving in the 49th Citizen's Forces. I have no idea what that is.

Hello Mallog

The Citizens Forces were one of two arms of the army in Aust from 1901 (Federation) up until 1915. The other was a permanent force which became the AIF in 1915.

Here is a site which may assist further

Thanks for that. I had already visited that site briefly but managed to miss what I was looking for. I don't know how I manage it - it's a gift !!
Anyway on taking up your suggestion I found out some more useful information about the boys I have been looking up.
