Hi Heather

Try www.regiments.org and perhaps you will find what you're looking for, very useful site.

The Scottish Rifles was the name of the Cameronians (quite distinct from the Cameron Highlanders), the full name of the regiment being The Scottish Rifles (Cameronians), formed in 1881 by the amalgamation of the 26th of Foot The Cameronian Regiment and the 90th of Foot The Perthshire Volunteers Light Infantry.

There were a total of 27 (twenty seven) battalions in WWI, - the original 2 regular Bns, 2 Special Reserve, 4 Territorial, 11 only ever on Home Service, and 8 active service Bns in the "New Army". There were 7,070 casualties. 3 VCs were awarded during WWI.

The regiment was disbanded on 14th May 1968 at a final conventicle at their place of raising in 1793 - Douglas. They had refused the opportunity to amalgamate with another regiment, considering that it would be impossible to maintain the traditions of the Cameronians under such conditions.

Given that you have his regimental number you should be able to establish which battalion was involved. Assuming that the War Diary is extant, - at Kew, - and you know the date, - it should be possible to find out roughly where the first aid posts were, but doubtful if it will be possible to be certain.

Hi Marilyn and Davie

Thanks for the info that you both gave me. I have bookmarked the site and saved all the info on the history on the Scottish Rifles.
