I already have Martha's mother's name as Annie Harton (at least I think it's an 'a') married to John Pollock both born in Ireland. Daniel Wilson married Martha Pollock on 10 July 1875 in Dunfermline.
Apparently Daniel Wilson died on 8 September 1919 at Glassiebarns, Craigluscar, Dunfermline.
Obviously I have more digging to do.
I do thank you all for your help. My brickwall seems to be crumbling brick by brick. Hope springs eternal!

All the best
John

Still working on this!
Where might I find burial records?
I shall be in Scotland next month and hope to spend a day in the Dunfermline area. Knowing cemeteries where the Wilsons are buried would make better use of my time.
Any suggestions?

John

Thanks Lesley, I'll try that.
I am also trying to locate Golden Grove, Saline. My grandfather was born and married there. I have found Saline but I don't know what Golden Grove refers to.

Hi John
Golden Grove, Saline
Have you seen this on an original birth/marriage entry?
Roughly what years are we looking at?

There seems to be a Dolan Grove in present day Saline. Wonder if there is a connection?

Best wishes

Hi Lesley

My mistake: John Wilson, my grandfather, was married at Golden Grove, Saline and his mother died there.
I have a copy of a page of the marriage register from ScotlandsPeople which states in the first column that the marriage took place on 3 June 1908 at Golden Grove, Saline. The handwriting is quite clear.
I have a similar page from ScotlandsPeople for Martha Wilson (nee Pollock), John's mother, who died 7 January 1895. Again the handwriting is quite legible.
Neither are original documents.

Hi John
Copies from Scotlands People are fine, no apologies needed!!...I was just interested to establish if it was something where a transcription had been involved. But if the handwriting is clear, then that is a good thing to know.

So it looks like Golden Grove was around 100yrs ago at least. I'm just not seeing anything of that name on an older or a current map, but I expect you have already covered this. Maybe someone more local to the area can shed some light on it, I hope. Is it perhaps a farm? There seems to be a Golden Grove Farm at Cowstandburn just S.E of Saline.

See ad for job:

If you enter Cowstrandburn on Google maps you will see the farm is.

Best wishes

Hello Lesley and John,

There’s a book published 1902 called “Romantic Culross, Torryburn, Carnock, Cairneyhill, Saline and Pitfirrane etc.” and on page 118 you can see on a snippet the end of a sentence and chapter “… Cowstrandburn, Golden Grove.”
http://www.google.com.au/books?id=J00DA ... %22&pgis=1

Before that the author is talking about murder and mayhem in Balwearie Castle and says “Mr Forfar, in the "Old Statistical Account," writing in 1793, states that in his day he frequently heard a song in which the details of the tragic event were chronicled ....”

Then there appears to be one other snippet that I can’t conjure up which means maybe there’s up to about 6 missing lines before “Cowstrandburn, Golden Grove” and I can’t figure out the context.

It looks from that almost as if Cowstrandburn was part of Golden Grove rather than the other way round. I can’t find anything else.

Alan

Later: I suppose Cowstrandburn (a watering place for cows?) could have been a lot smaller back then.

Ho Alan
From the look of things on Google maps, Cowstrandburn only consists of the new looking chicken farm which looks as if it has been an older farm before, what appears to be another steading or farm with a number of outbuilidngs and a "big house" and another house or two.

I suspect, though may be wrong, that Golden Grove is the name of the farm and it is in an area known as Cowstrandburn.

Also at Google books, The Fife Book‎ - Page 36
by Donald Omand, Cowstrandburn is described as a "homestead". Seems about right...

"Cowstrandburn in the west is a low-lying defended homestead, ..." seems there was an ancient hill fort there.

Best wishes
Lesley
