Hi Fiona,

Must admit I started by just looking at all the clues the death cert gave me and then it was the date of death & where it happened that gave the final clue. My Gx2 grandfather was from Saltcoats but it was seemingly a major incident and got a big write up, although I still intend to contact the North Ayrshire Library to see what the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald said.

Where was the death recorded? Might be worth contacting the local family history/archives there. Does it give his usual residence, as there might be something in the local paper.

That's all I can think of at the mo but if a wee bulb comes on in the middle of the night I'll post it.

Good luck
Donna

 I'm sure you probably have but have you googled his name with " " around it and put +ss orion, might be worth a try.

There is no mention on death cert of where or how he died
The only thing i can add is that as you know the ship and the year maybe at the very least you could find out where the ship was sailing to - which Greenwich might be able to help you with ?.
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Hi everyone
Thanks very much for all your suggestions - I'll have to speak nicely to my brother as he lives in London!
I got the info from the marine register - not a death certificate as such.
I did find out a wee bit about the ship thanks to TS. Just curious to know how he died as he was quite young.
Thanks again
Fiona
BTW He was from Caithness so I will check out the local archives there aswell.

Deaths at sea

Hi

Just a thought, but there's also the Scottish Maritime Museum at Irvine who may be able to assist with some information if they still hold it. The Archivist may be able to help if you ask them!

There used to be a very helpful guy there but don't know what is going on there at the moment. It was threatened with closure and I don't know if it got a reprieve. He found out stuff for me but I can't remember his name sorry but worth writing
