Got it in one [cheers]

But be prepared to stay up late so that you can be online at 00:00:01 on the 30th, in order to maximise access, as previous experience has been that the site is very quickly overloaded ..............................

I for one could not forget it as it is my Son's Birthday, and no I didn't name him Andrew.
I found lots of data on there last year and waiting for it to come round again.
Cheers

I've found the Scotsman great for "putting flesh on the bones" for my Edinburgh ancestors and have even found bits about some of my folk from the Glasgow/Ayrshire area.

I know I could go to the newspaper library in Colindale to research some of the others but it's a 4 hour round trip. Wouldn't it be great if the Glasgow Herald/Evening Times group did the same with their archives (and the Aberdeen P&J, and the Free Press - west coast ... I've forgotten its proper name, and ....)
<goes into "when I was a lass" mode> sometimes I think we're spoiled by the amount of info that's available online now. In a couple of days I can find so much information about my husband's family that would have taken me years when I started on my own family <end "when I was a lass" mode>
Mind you, the internet has made our hobby available to many more people who couldn't have got access to, or found out what was in, the archives in the past.

All the best
Sheena

:D Hi Sheena, thanks for the time you must have spent trying to find this information on my Grandfather,he must have been a very brave man.He was later gassed in France during ww1.One minute he is praised by the Kaiser and then they try to kill him. What luck. The article you found on page 5 of The Scotsman Jan 3rd 1910,can this be bought and if so how do you go about it?No mention of the watch would have been made at this time because it had only just occurred,no doubt in the tons of newspapers it will have been printed. Thanks again.David

Hi David

The Scotsman archives from 1817-1950 are online here: http://archive.scotsman.com/ Searching is free and you get a brief (~100 words) view of the begining of the section - not all the articles in it. To view the full section you need to pay (£7.95 per 24 hour period) so it's worthwhile listing all the possible events that might have appeared to do a 24-hour "blitz" & get the most from your money.
Be wary if you want to print or save the article - they're broken down into individual chunks which don't link up with the size of the article. I've found the best way is to use the "PDF (printer friendly) button so you can then save or print it in the original layout. The other advantage of the PDF version is that it gives you a 2-page document with all the source information (original newspaper date & page; and original article url) so you don't need to remember to make a note!

Of course you can always wait until St Andrew's Day when, as David says, they've been doing 24-hour freebies each year so far.

Like I said earlier, I wish I could remember the exact search term I used but you can search on the specific date so it should be fairly easy to find.

all the best
Sheena
