Passenger Ship Triton

Post by talkhugh » Thu Mar 20, 2008 3:11 am

I would like to learn more about this passenger ship of the 1800s. Can anyone tell me where I might find anything about it on the Internet? Maybe even a sketch of it?

Thanks.

Hi Hugh,

If you haven't already done so, you might want to take a look at the following site I found by "Googling". There seems to be a few mentions of the Triton but don't know whether any of them would be the one you're looking for.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... _works.htm

Here's a quote for one Triton that went aground in 1866.
Quote:
"Triton, a two masted sailing ship used by Wesleyan Missionary Society. There is a plan and side view of the ship. Triton went aground in Palliser Bay on 10 Jun 1866 and became a total loss."
Not sure if it's what you're looking for and I only had a quick nosey around looking for the image of the ship, without success.

Regards,
Anne H

Hello Hugh,

From your previous posts I can see that you’re looking for a ship called the Triton that sailed from Scotland to Canada in 1828.

Triton is a nautical name and there would have been several “Tritons” during the 1800s and I doubt that your Triton could be expected to be around for a great many years after 1828 given the usual wood rot and shipwreck situation.

This Google Book has details of a Court case concerning an incident with a cargo of salt in 1845 (pages 797-810). Perhaps it was the same Triton, in those days a ship would probably carry a mix of passengers and cargo and could be adapted to specialise in either.

Here’s one off to Australia in 1825.

Here’s one that sank in 1828

In fact if you search Google Books for "ship triton" and others and select “Full view” you’ll find Tritons of all shapes and sizes and nationalities. You may find something interesting there.

An average privately owned ships prospects of having its image recorded by the available methods of the day and for it to have survived and be identifiable would be very slim and you would have to be very lucky to find something along those lines.

Hope this helps,
Alan.

Hi Hugh:

I was having a look around Library & Archives Canada http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca

There was a reference to the Triton arriving at Grosse-Ile with persons who died on the voyage from Liverpool in 1832 and also to S/S Triton.

There may also be something on the National Archives of Québec http://www.bnquebec.ca or even something in the newspapers of the day for Québec and Montréal. You may be able to obtain microfilms of those newspapers through your local library.
