SS Hesperian - Glasgow to Montreal 1914

Post by darylrodger » Tue Jul 08, 2008 10:03 pm

Hi,

Does anyone know how long it took for the ship ss Hesperian to sail from Glasgow to Montreal in 1914 ? An ancestor names William Rodger immigrated along with his wife aboard it.

It would be a big help if anyone could tell me.

Thanks,

Daryl

Hi Daryl
I expect you have seen this already, but just incase not (good piccies!):

On June 18, 1908 Montgomery, his wife
Barbara and two of his younger daughters sailed on
the maiden voyage of the Allan Line’s SS Hesperian
from Glasgow to Montreal, arriving in Vancouver by
train three days later.
Seems awffy quick....do they mean Montreal to Vancouver in three days? Surely it can't be Glasgow to Vancouver in three days???

Best wishes
Lesley

Looks like the Atlanic crossing took about 10 days:

Anderson, George Bennie, b. abt 1902, date to Canada: (puir wee chap) 4 April 1914,
at age 12 sent to Brockville, Ontario on the S. S. Hesperian. Arrived on Apr 14, 1914 in Halifax. Quarrier's Party. Children of James ANDERSON and Elizabeth BENNIE of Glasgow, both of whom died prioir to 1914, but probably as early as 1906.
Best wishes

The SS Hesperian seems to have had five sailings from the UK to Montreal/Quebec City in 1914. Two of these seem to have been from Glasgow. If you go to www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/archivianet/passenger you will find this information and be able to search the passenger lists.

Searching for McMurray, Pollock, McLean, Shearer, Jamieson, Plumpton.
