Hi,
I'm currently trying to research a master mariner named Charles Hamilton, who lived in Keir St, Glasgow, in 1928.
He was aboard a ship called ss 'Yearglin' ? according to his marriage cert.

I would like to know the name of the ship, and what happened to him if possible. Where can I find his master mariner records ?
Regards,
Daryl

Hi Lesley,
Thanks for that. I've now managed to upload an image of Charles' marriage cert which states his address and ship's name (which I'm having trouble deciphering). It looked like s.s. 'Yearglin' but don't know where to go to look it up. I had a look at the Lloyds site but couldn't find Charles.
Any ideas ?
Daryl

Hi Daryl
Can you give us the link to where you have uploaded it? Which site is it on?
As far as I'm aware "s.s." would suggest a steam ship
Best wishes

Hi Daryl
I'm not able to read it as the image is tiny - did you perhaps link to the thumbnail rather than the full size image?
If you go to the full size image in your photobucket account, there should be a link in that page that you can copy & paste.
However, having said that, even looking at what I think is the "full size" image, it is still the same very small size... not sure what has happened there.
Best wishes

Hi Lesley,
I've upload another copy of Charles' cert on flickr, a larger version and hopefully (again) clearer.
Here goes . . .

Hi Daryl
That is certainly a better size of image. It does look like the first letter may be a "Y" - it certanily does not appear to be a "F" or a "T" from the look of other examples of these on the page. However, any names I think it may look like so far are not returning any hopeful looking results with a Google...hmmm. Either it is a very obscure ship, or more likely, I'm just not getting the correct letters in the correct order. It is beginning to feel a bit like that "Morcambe and Wise" sketch with Andre Previn - the right notes but not necessarily in the right order...
For those of you who have not a clue what I am on about, it is a very funny sketch...which I admit has nothing at all to do with master mariners, family history or steam ships, but was a very memorable sketch at the time!

Hi Daryl and Lesley
I think it could be Yewglen . At least there was a ship called that around that time. ( There are records od it at
http://www.plimsollshipdata.org/ ) .
But iy wouldn't surprise me if it was something completely different !

Well done Sally - that certainly seems a likely contender, but I'm a bit puzzled by the details saying "Year ship changed to this name:1945" - so maybe it is another Yewglen we are dealing with? That one seems to have got though several names.
There appear to be
three Yewglens pictured here - but no dates or details to help us
