INS number
Hi Tracy
Could it be the boat's registration number do you think? With INS being the registration code for Inverness? This is the only theory that I could come up with after time spent googling
Happy hunting

Thanks David
When i first found that number i was hoping it was something to do with his identity but alas it turns out now probably not !. I went to Greenwich yesterday as they have records for seaman in the years ending 5 and i know what ship he was on in 1905 but the library was shut !! But i am determind to find out what happened to him - my gt grandfather. I have other numbers on a sailors and firemans union card , North Shields branch but i suppose thats another one for the N/A

Watching this fantastic series
The Lost World of Friese-Greeneon BBC2 right now but nearly finished
tonight its Gretna Green to John O'Groats
I just saw a fishing boat in Oban with INS 173 painted on the side so at least i know what the boat would have looked like

I seem to be going round in circles with this one !
The registration number isnt on the above site
. I am getting the impression these fishing boats wernt registered at or in the same way as the Merchant ships ie with Lloyds ?. I tried Newfoundland but they had no info.
I cant see anywhere that is telling me where i can find information, it is probably staring me right in face but i just cant see it !. This is the only boat i have a number for and it seems if you have the number it is meant to be easier finding your man
!
So does anyone know where would i find information on this boat that is registered in Inverness ?
Thanks
