Glasgow Shipyards

Post by momat » Wed Oct 19, 2005 9:47 am

Does anyone know of any lists from the Glasgow Shipyards regading employees.
Many of my Husbands ancestors worked as Ship Smiths and related trades over several generations and I would be interested in tracing data.

Also would like to know if such employees would be working on yards at CENSUS time therefore explaining there absence from home at this time

Thanks
Maureen

Hi Momat,

Check out "Denny's Shipyard" which is now on the second page of General Discussion. It includes the GUAS response to my own search which may enlighten.

I think I also found a listing for my grandfather in the National Archives, he had a seamans ticket for some reason, although we never knew him to have sailed. It's always possible some applied for a ticket just in case or did make an occasional trip. My Grandfather's mother put an end to him accepting a job in Patagonia :(

I think they had to have a seamans ticket in case they were involved in trials not just in case they headed out to sea.
I have a vague recollection of this but not sure from where but hey thats not unusual.
