Ship Brokers in Glasgow/Govan area around 1881

Post by LesleyB » Wed Nov 09, 2005 12:56 pm

I've found quite a few references to Thomas McLaren & Co (Glasgow) Ltd; Shipbrokers; 1878-1965 and some of their records seem to be held at the Universitry Archives in Glasgow.

But does anyone know, were there other ship brokers around at the time? Or was McLaren the only one?
*later - just found another for the correct period - R & J Craig 1876-1903, records at Mitchell Library.
Trying to find out who Alexander McNicol might have been working for in 1881.

Hello Lesley,

I searched the 1881 census discs for shipbroker and ship broker - I stopped counting at 30.

Regards,

Thanks Annette
I'm obviously having a duh! / eedjit! moment - didn't think to check the census disks!!

However, given the number you have found, this is maybe not going to be a very useful angle of approach to the problem.... back to the drawing board....

Best wishes,
Lesley
