Ship Carpenter

Post by clare » Sat Mar 25, 2006 4:22 pm

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone knew whether someone with the occupation "Ship Carpenter" would work at sea or at the docks. Any ideas?

Cheers,
Clare

Hi Clare

In my experience it could be either, - on board ship, - see the site found by Lesley; or back in the dockyard, naval or merchant marine, where the ships were built.

Hi Lesley and David,

I have a 'missing' ancestor on the 1851 census who was a Ship Carpenter. His wife and children are where I would expect, but no sign of the head of the house. I guess that it is a reasonable assumption that he was at sea at the time of the census.

Cheers,
Clare

Post by Hugh Stevely » Sun Mar 26, 2006 10:53 am

Hi Clare
Most ships i sailed on we had a Ships Carpenter on-board and some shipping companys he would be Classified as a Officer also the smaller companys would have them in the ship yard if he was waiting to re-turn to sea--sorry i dont go back that far good luck with your search.
Hugh.
