Post by trishtrash » Sat Apr 08, 2006 6:53 pm

Does anyone know anything about Murdoch McKenzie Ballantyne - master mariner. He was born c 1862 in Lanarkshire and ended his days in a seamans retirement home in Wirral on Merseyside.
Surname interest: McKenzie, Ballantyne in Lanarkshire. Wh(y)ite in Blantyre. McPherson. McNaught.

A quick search on the online IGI for Murdoch Ballantyne gives only one result.

Birth of: Murdoch MaKenzie Ballantyne
Born: 02-Dec-1862 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Father: George Ballantyne
Mother: Catherine McKenzie

Armed with that information, his birth certificate should be easy for you to find on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk .

Also siblings found on the online IGI:
Agnes Ballantyne, 1856 Calton, Glasgow
Jessie Ballantyne, 1859 Calton, Glasgow
John Ballantyne, 1860 Bridgeton, Glasgow

(Murdoch McKenzie Ballantyne, 1862 Anderston, Glasgow)
James Wood Ballantyne, 1864 Anderston, Glasgow

And from the OPRs on the IGI the parents marriage in Glasgow on 12-Oct-1851.

All the best,

If i could just add a wee bit to Andrew's findings on the BALLANTYNEs,
The family are in Bridgeton 1861 census, but might be indexed as BALANTINE.
All family as born Glasgow except father George 34, as born Leith, MLN.

Thanks both. I had the first piece of info but not the second which may explain why I've found tracing him so hard! I was hoping to find out something about his seafaring days so that I could confirm I had the right Murdoch. Tried the Archives site but without a service number I still can't confirm anything. :?
