Did he die or jump ship?
Hi everyone, trying to solve the mystery of a dissapearing G.Grandfather last heard of in 1886 when he signed his son,s birth cert. His name Samuel Connis d.o.b.1854.merchant seaman, stoker.I found his Royal navy records, they took me to 1882.
Would he have been in both the Royal/Merchant navy?can,t find a death cert.he may have jumped ship, where do I look from here?
thanks May.

Hi May
If he was lost at sea he would be registered in the Deaths at Sea, although not in SP.
Where was he born? again that is where his death would be registered, not where he currently lived.
If you post more details we may be able to help point you in the right direction.

Going to watch your discussion with interest, May, as I have much the same problem but in the 1920's. The added difficulty I have is that he was Irish. I am sure you will get lots of pointers. All the best

thankyou for your replies. The details I have are SAMUEL CONNIS d.o.b.1854.born in PAISLEY.His Royal navy record was from 1875-1882.On his son,s birth cert. in 1886 it says merchant services. My grandfather said he went to sea and never returned, surely if he died his widow would have been notified? Where do I find deaths at sea? Hope you can help me out
thankyou,May

May
had a quick look for your Samuel without success but that does not mean he was not lost at sea. I noted from your other posting about the 7 year wait, which I believe is the period you need before you can have someone declared dead. So he may have jumped ship, or just disappeared.
You can get the Register of Deaths on line at ScotlandPeople under Minor Records or in book form from most major libraries.
Mallog,
Again if Irish they will be registered in Ireland, but still should be in the Deaths at Sea, The earlier deaths mid 1800s are not always recorded to my dismay.
